Flow Cytometry - FACS Specialist (1.0 FTE)

The Faculty of Science is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive colleague to operate our newly established Flow Cytometry Facility. The Flow Cytometry Facility aims to offer cutting-edge service using the latest flow cytometer technologies to scientists at Utrecht University and neighbouring research institutes.
In this position you are responsible for ensuring day to day operation of the Flow Cytometry Facility, troubleshooting of instruments and software, and providing introductory training and technical advice on experiment design to users. You set up equipment for cell sorting and perform or assist sorting experiments for users. You are essential for the successful execution of numerous projects that rely on cell sorting, ranging from phenotyping and indexing of cells by fluorescent markers, to facilitating single cell sequencing applications or Cas9-CRISPR screens.
The Flow Cytometry Facility is located within the Hugo R. Kruyt building at the Utrecht Science Park, and is part of a lively, international, interdisciplinary, and highly interactive research hub in Utrecht. The Facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art sorters and analysers, including a BD FACSymphony A1 (14 colors, 4 lasers, HTS Plate Loader and Small Particle Detector), a BD FACSAria Fusion (5 lasers, ML2 compatible) and a large particle Flow Cytometer (BioSorter, 3 lasers, 10-1500 micron). You will obtain training on the machines from BD Biosciences and Union Biometrica. Additional training and support will be provided by staff of the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with whom the facility will be coordinated. Other training opportunities will be provided where necessary.

We are looking for a colleague with a service-minded and friendly attitude, who likes to interact with multiple users from various disciplines. We would also like you to bring:

• a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field;
• experience in flow cytometry and cell sorting (on advanced instruments);
• proficient in English, both written and spoken. Command of Dutch language is preferred but not a requirement;
• previous experience in biosafety is preferred;
• demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills;
• the ability to plan and organise complex procedures.

• A position for a year with the prospect of permanent employment;
• a full-time gross salary ranging from €2.960 to €5.439 in scale 10-11;
• 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;

The facility will be located within the Department of Biology The department consists of 12 research groups, which are organised within two institutes: the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity (IBB) and the Institute of Environmental Biology (IEB). The department of Biology coordinates the teaching of the Bachelor’s programme in Biology, as well as the Master’s programmes and PhD courses that are offered through the Graduate School of Life Sciences . Each institute promotes the maintenance of a high-quality and interactive research environment.
