JOB DESCRIPTION
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is looking for a new director and leading light for the Hubrecht Institute. You are an internationally authoritative scientist with a research activity in, or relevant to, developmental and stem cell biology with a large international network, a broad vision of science and excellent leadership skills.

Research at the Hubrecht Institute covers various aspects of developmental and stem cell biology, such as signalling in stem cells and early embryonic development, heart development, regeneration, epigenetics, genome architecture, cell cycle control, DNA repair, dynamics in gene expression and quantitative biology of gene expression. This research can lead to innovation in, for instance, the treatment of cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to an interactive, international scientific environment, the institute offers excellent research facilities.

The institute is dynamic, diverse and young: the average researcher age is around 30 with a wide variety of nationalities. In the years ahead, the institute will grow from 20 to 25 research groups.

The Hubrecht Institute is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and is located at Utrecht Science Park. Since 2008, the institute has been affiliated with UMC Utrecht. The institute has a partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and cooperates with numerous laboratories at local, national and international level. The institute has collaboration agreements with Utrecht University, Princess Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology, and Oncode Institute.

Job description:
• You act as the leading light of the Hubrecht Institute and manage the institute in an inspiring and connecting manner.
• You are ultimately responsible for the direction and management of the institute, in line with the strategy of the Academy. You are supported by the Managing Director.
• You act, from your scientific expertise, as a connecting factor between the research groups of the institute. In addition, you are group leader of one of the current or future research groups of the institute.
• You develop a clear vision regarding the profile and future development of the Hubrecht Institute, identify important national and international developments in science and society and respond effectively. You have the task of ensuring that the institute will continue to be a leading international institute, where scientific talent flourishes.
• You play an important role in national and international networks and partnerships in the field and promote interdisciplinary cooperation with universities, Academy institutes and Dutch Research Council (NWO) institutes.
• You position the institute with national and international bodies that fund science (including EU, NWO), knowledge institutions, civil-society institutions, government institutions and the business community, and by doing so create new partnerships.
• You are committed to stimulating science communication and maximising the societal impact of the institute's research activities.
• You represent the Hubrecht Institute in national and international bodies and in doing so you promote the interests of both the institute and the Academy.

REQUIREMENTS
• You are an internationally authoritative and innovative scientist who conducts research in the field of, or relevant to, developmental and stem cell biology.
• You have a large national and international network and are demonstrably able to use it to form strategic alliances and acquire grants for research. You are open to public debate and committed to scientific integrity and solidity.
• You have proven leadership qualities, the ability to connect, and you are inventive and engaged. You stand for and promote an inspiring, safe, diverse and inclusive research environment.
• You are honest, result-oriented and decisive and show dynamism. You are a strong communicator, both internally and externally, have an eye for the human dimension, create a basis of support and maintain a dialogue.
• You have an affinity with finance, human resources and ICT policy that enables you to take integral responsibility for the institute.
• You have in any event an excellent command of written and spoken English. If you do not have a command of the Dutch language, it is expected that you are prepared to passively and actively master the Dutch language in the foreseeable future by means of language training.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This employment contract with the Academy will be entered into for an indefinite period of time. The director will be appointed for a period of five years, with the intention of reappointment for a second and final term of five years. The commencement date is in principle 1 September 2022 but can be agreed in consultation with you. Depending on education and work experience, the person appointed will be remunerated at scale 18 (of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of the annual salary. Since 2008, the institute has been affiliated with the University Medical Center Utrecht, advancing the translation of research into clinical practice.
