Do you have experience in programming and scripting in statistical programmes? Would you like to contribute to high-quality humanities research by supporting researchers on digital matters? And are you able to translate our researchers' wishes into digital applications? If yes, then you have a part to play at Radboud University!
As Digital Humanities and Software and Dataset Sustainability Programmer, your main task will be to support researchers in resolving issues concerning digital applications related to their research. The associated activities range from programming and scripting to developing or modifying databases (e.g. with historical personal data), advising on converting databases to analytical files, making files interoperable through RDF/LOD, as well as version control and maintenance of existing applications and datasets.
It is essential that you are able to translate the researchers' wishes into concrete digital applications.
As Digital Humanities and Software and Dataset Sustainability Programmer, you will be part of the Humanities Lab team. The Humanities Lab consists of several experimental labs and a computer lab, where you will work with several committed experts. You will report to the Head of the Humanities Lab. You will be based at the Faculty of Arts (0.7 FTE), but will also work for researchers at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies (0.3 FTE).

Profile
  • You have at least completed higher vocational education and have demonstrable experience with programming, e.g. in Python, and with scripting in statistical packages, e.g. R.
  • You have knowledge of record linkage techniques, handwritten text and entry recognition, optical character recognition, version control of databases and sustainable maintenance of existing applications or know how to make a good case for why and how to master these issues quickly.
  • You have (demonstrable) affinity with the field of humanities.
  • You possess organisation sensitivity, are flexible, proactive and service-oriented, and have good social and communication manners.
  • You have an excellent command of Dutch and English, both orally and in writing.

We are

The Faculty of Arts  is committed to producing scientific and social knowledge that matters. With over 500 academic and support staff, we teach and conduct research in history and art, languages and cultures, and linguistics and communication, using innovative methodologies and collaborating closely across disciplines. Our research is embedded in two research institutes: the Centre for Language Studies (CLS ) and the Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH ). With around 2,500 students spread across three departments - the Department of History, Art History and Antiquity, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and the Department of Language and Communication - we aim to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive world. We therefore particularly welcome applications from candidates with different perspectives, backgrounds and skills that can enhance our training and research profiles. The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies  has over 160 staff and 1,000 students from home and abroad. The curriculum includes several top-quality courses and has both in-depth disciplinary degree programmes and interdisciplinary and inter-faculty programmes. The faculty offers innovative study and research programmes with a strong focus on current social issues.
The Humanities Lab performs support activities for the faculty within the context of experiments and digital applications. There are, for example, experimental labs focused on eye-tracking or video recording, and there is also a computer lab. The team consists of ten members, each with their own specialisation and area of focus. Everyone has a strong independent work ethic and there is an open and informal atmosphere within the department.
