Job description
Eindhoven University of Technology: where innovation starts, and people matter
In service to society, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) strives for excellence in academic research, education, innovation, and impact, contributing to several of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. At the heart of TU/e is an inspiring, open, diverse, and tight-knit international community of talented and bright people; with 13,000 students, close to 7,000 staff, and countless partners. Some 4,500 TU/e researchers thrive, in collaboration with academic peers and partners, in top-notch labs and off-campus settings all over the world. TU/e is at the heart of a unique ecosystem for innovation and growth, Brainport Eindhoven; one of Europe’s leading innovative top technology regions. It is fast becoming the number one motor of the economy of The Netherlands, making further growth of TU/e inevitable in the years to come.
The Department of Electrical Engineering, one of the nine departments at the TU/e, aims to be a research-driven and design-oriented world-class institute by having education, research and valorisation reinforce each other. Activities share an application-oriented character, a high degree of complexity and a large synergy between multiple facets of the field. The mission of the Department is to work towards a ‘Smart Sustainable Society’, a ‘Connected World’, and a Healthy Humanity (‘Care & Cure’), in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Department positions itself as a strong partner for interdisciplinary applied research and design within the Brainport region, and as a globally oriented organisation for Electrical Engineering research and education in its full breadth. The Department is enthusiastically growing in staff and students, and there are strong indications that further growth will characterize the next decennium. We are prepared to explore new roads to make the most out of this opportunity.
Dean of the department of Electrical Engineering
TU/e is seeking to appoint a new Dean who will further build upon the strengths of the Department of Electrical Engineering through an inspiring vision to effectively guide the Department through growth, and stimulate effective cooperation and interactions between research, education, impact, and supporting processes.
As a member of the Consultative Council and the Doctorate Board, the Dean contributes to determining the strategy, course and development of TU/e. The Dean acts together with the Executive Board and fellow Deans. The TU/e mission, vision and strategy are translated into a multi-year policy for the Department.
The Dean implements the Department agenda together with the Department Board. Besides the Dean, the Department Board consists of a Vice Dean and a Managing Director. The Dean chairs the Department Board, which holds final and integral responsibility for the Department’s education, research, societal impact, and operations.
The Dean represents the TU/e and the Department to various internal and external stakeholders, acts in a diplomatic way within the force field of the university and maintains good contacts with adjacent disciplines. To the outside world, the Dean improves the national and international visibility. This also calls for modern leadership by creating a broad base of research program leaders to represent the Department.
The Dean is keen to represent the Department within and outside the university and to position it as an internationally leading department in Electrical Engineering with respect to research and education. The successful candidate takes responsibility for department and university initiatives and works on the further development and implementation of the strategy within the Department. The Dean takes the lead and contributes their own vision that is consistent with the overarching university vision and strategy. They contribute proactively and constructively to the governance and strategic development of TU/e and have affinity with organisational development.
As a leader, the Dean stimulates mutual involvement in the Department by being visible and investing in an open and good relationship with the academic community, with professional staff members and with the Department council. The Dean encourages collaboration among people and different parts of the Department and collaboration with other departments, institutions, and support services and create synergy across disciplinary borders.
Job requirements
The Dean is an established scientist (full professor) with an active background in one of the domains of the Department. The successful candidate has an existing international and national network within and outside of academia and can make new connections between department, academic and societal actors. In previous career steps, the Dean has developed managerial qualities and has shown ability to lead in a complex, knowledge intensive environment. The management and leadership style are characterised by integrity, open dialogue, transparency, and the ability to build bridges as well as cut through knots. The Dean listens to various perspectives, weighs them, makes informed decisions, and creates support. The successful candidate has a natural focus on talent scouting and strongly encourages talent and leadership development with a warm heart for diversity and inclusion, and an eye for social safety. The Dean encourages team spirit and collegiality and nurtures academic citizenship to create a thriving community.
Conditions of employment
Appointment: The appointment is for a period of four years with the possibility of reappointment. In addition, the Dean will be appointed to the position of permanent Professor by the Executive Board. TU/e has adopted an active policy to increase the number of female scientists across all disciplines of the university. Equally, TU/e strives for a diverse composition of Department Boards. Therefore, female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
Remuneration: The position is valued according to the associated professor salary scale, and will, in addition, receive an administration allowance for fulfilling the role of Dean.
