Data Manager - iRODS pilot

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 10 Mar 2023

Would you like to help improve research data management practices at TU Delft? Join us to co-lead a pilot on the implementation of a new, innovative tool for data management!

The massive quantities of data produced by scientific research create new challenges in terms of storage, curation and dissemination of such data. This is particularly true at TU Delft - the leading technical university in the Netherlands and home to cutting edge institutes, such as for quantum research and AI, and powerful infrastructures, such as the Delft Blue supercomputer.

To tackle these challenges, the Open Science Programme at TU Delft has allocated funds to hire three colleagues to pilot the implementation of iRODS at TU Delft. In addition to the Data Manager (this position), we are also hiring a Software Developer and a Systems Administrator to form a team to pilot iRODS implementation at TU Delft. Your primary role within the team will be to work closely with researchers to agree on metadata to decribe datasets and to develop automated pipelines for data processing. iRODS is an open source tool aimed to help researchers manage their data.

TU Delft is planning to work on this pilot in collaboration with other Dutch universities and KU Leuven. Thus, you will not only work with researchers and support staff at TU Delft, but you will also have ample opportunities to collaborate with colleagues (inter)nationally.

Your tasks will include:

  • Working closely with the research community to agree on metadata used to describe their datasets and workflows for effective data processing (primary task)
  • Collaborating with your technical colleagues to find best ways to implement researchers' workflows in iRODS
  • Regularly liaising with the research community to ask for feedback and implement changes
  • Collaborating with colleagues internally (digital competence centre experts) and externally (iRODS consortia)
  • Periodically reporting on the project progress and making recommendations on the next steps

Required skills for candidates:

  • Have a good understanding of data management plays within contemporary research
  • Good understanding of metadata for research data and metadata standards
  • Have at least a Masters, ideally with a strong data component
  • Have experience working with research data and with setting up tools and workflows for implementing good data management practices
  • Be willing to learn about and engage with a variety of types of data and research projects
  • Have good people and communication skills, with a good level of English
  • Be willing to collaborate with other colleagues from your team(s)
  • Duration of contract is 1 year.
  • A job of 36-40 hours per week.
  • A salary based on scale 10 of the CAO for Dutch Universities with a minimum of €2.960,- and a maximum of € 4.670,- gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.
  • Discount with health insurers.
  • Flexible working week.
  • Every year, 232 leave hours (at 38 hours). You can also sell or buy additional leave hours via the individual choice budget.
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses.
  • Partially paid parental leave
  • Attention for working healthy and energetically with the vitality program.
  • Please note that this position is based in the Netherlands (working remotely from abroad is not possible). EU citizenship or a European working permit is required to apply.
