Job description
TU Delft, Aardyn, Shell and EBN are taking an important step forward in the energy transition and are installing a geothermal source on the TU Delft campus. This source provides both the campus and a number of neighbourhoods in Delft with sustainable heat. A unique project in which a sustainable geothermal source is exploited on the TU Delft campus and at the same time is linked to a major scientific research program at TU Delft.
In the first phase of the project we are going to drill two wells to a depth of 2.4 km. During this phase we will also be taking core samples from the wells for further study.
We are looking for a technician that will support the science team during implementation/drilling phase of the geothermal source. You will be part of the laboratory/research staff which is located in the Department of Geoscience & Engineering. You will work in close cooperation with other technicians, the core science team and especially the geological expert of the science team.
The technician will be responsible for all activities related to the cores and cuttings of the geothermal project. You will support the science team in the organisation of the core storage and the experiments on the cores and cuttings. The role is a unique growth opportunity for a technician that want to bridge te gap from working solely with your hands to assisting in organizing high tech research. The role is project based for now with potential to become a fixed position in the future
Specific responsibilities include:
- Setting up and organising the core storage of the department
- Handling of the cores from the geothermal source, i.e., transport to the storage
- Prepare cores for storage and registration in digital database.
- Core measurements
- Core scanning and photographing using state of the art CT scanning
- Taking core plugs and support characterisation experiments.

Requirements
The role requires someone with practical skills and a “can do” mentality. You will be involved in a wide range of practical issues during the implementation and drilling phase of the geothermal well. Therefore, we expect someone that enjoys this hectic role and can creatively adapt to operational issues with smart practical solutions.
We are looking for a team player that is able to take on responsibility for practical tasks, able to prioritize and execute them independently. You are able to perform in a fast paced and growing working environment.
Conditions of employment
Fixed-term contract: 1 year.
- A salary according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
