Associate Student Life Officer

Are you a calm self-motivated fast learner who is passionate about student well-being, welfare and safety? Then we at the Amsterdam University College (AUC) are excited to hear from you, an associate Student Life Officer (SLO).

As our associate SLO, you will be closely involved with our Student Life Officer and our colleagues who are responsible for supporting students’ welfare and well-being. You will be expected to:

• provide one-on-one sensitive and confidential support for individual students experiencing difficulties in living and/or studying at AUC, and refer them to professional services as required;
• help develop and coordinate Introduction Week and orientation sessions for new students;
• contribute to the development of (new) policies, projects and activities, and advise the AUC management team;
• help coordinate the AUC Well-being Team of Resident Assistants, Peer Supporters, and Graduate Assistants and maximise their potential.

You are a service-oriented student adviser/counsellor who loves to promote a culture of inclusion. Approachable, able to work independently, and oriented towards continuous improvement and optimisation.

Preferably you already experienced/trained in student advising or counselling in a residential university campus setting as well as experienced in management of teams of (student) volunteers. A background in psychology can be an advantage. You are also able to:

• act with tact, diplomacy, discretion and respect for confidentiality and data privacy;
• use well-developed interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, and you have ambitions to promote a culture of inclusion where students from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, gender identities/expressions, religions and physical and mental abilities are able to thrive and succeed;
• communicate fluently in English (at least high B2 CEFR) and also have good skills in Dutch. It is an advantage if you already have knowledge of Dutch legislation and support systems for university students’ health and welfare, including financial aid.

Because of the coronavirus measures, you will be expected to work from home as much as possible for the time being (AUC will provide a laptop). You will need to be able to access an adequate WiFi/internet connection in order to take part in online meetings (video-conferencing) and work remotely.

We offer an employment contract for 23 hours a week for one year, with the prospect of a permanent contract if we assess your performance positively. The UFO profile Student Counsellor 2/Studentendecaan 2 applies.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €2,709 to €4,274 (scale 10) gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week), exclusive 8 % holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities  is applicable. In addition, the UvA offers good provisions regarding pension, health care, training facilities, mobility and partially paid parental leave.

About the Amsterdam University College

Amsterdam University College (AUC)  offers a liberal arts and sciences programme leading to a joint Bachelor (Honours) degree issued by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. AUC students live and study together on an international campus located in Amsterdam Science Park. The programme is taught entirely in English, is small-scale and selective, and admits a maximum of 300 students each year.
