Associate Professor of Conflict Management and Mediation (1.0 FTE)

Background and Key responsibilities

The successful candidate will have demonstrable research interests and a strong publication record in the areas of conflict management and mediation as well as extensive teaching experience in topics related to the Institute’s BA, MA and postgraduate programme offerings. The position is aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, publication, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of rapid growth of student numbers and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

• conduct independent and team-led research in the fields of conflict management and mediation, broadly defined, including topics related to conflict and peace studies, conflict resolution, international negotiations and bargaining as well as national, European and international organizations’ approaches to peace and security;
• support the ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of ISGA by publishing in leading international outlets and by attracting substantive research grants;
• teach qualitative and quantitative methods courses (qualitative research design & analysis and research design);
• teach in the BA and/or Minor and MA programmes as needed with a particular emphasis on the Master International Relations and Diplomacy (MIRD);
• contribute to the development of new courses or programme offerings at BA, MA or executive training level;
• contribute to tasks related to the management of education programmes;
• contribute to the development of research groups and the Institute via administrative service, such as participating in committees related to the institute and its programmes;
• supervise BA theses, MA theses, PhD dissertations and capstone projects.

Selection Criteria

• PhD degree in Political Science, War Studies, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Security Studies or a closely related field.
• Strong research qualities manifested in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals in areas related to conflict management and mediation.
• Demonstrable experience in and passion for research-led teaching.
• Demonstrable experience in the management of education programmes.
• Applicants must be able to teach in English.
• Interest and ability to work in an interdisciplinary context.
• Ability to connect academic research to policy-oriented impact.
• Strong policy network in the area of international relations and international organization, security studies or global affairs.
• Demonstrable commitment to the public and political debate related to core issues of security and global affairs.

Terms and conditions

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamically growing Institute. We offer a fulltime appointment for initially 18 months, with the possibility and intention to turn the position into a permanent one, based on funding and performance. The salary varies, depending on qualifications and experience, from € 5,275.- to € 6,421.- gross per month based on full-time employment (pay scale 13 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
