Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three departments: quality engineering, industrial engineering, and construction engineering and built environment. The department has approximately 80 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and on Campus Gotland. This position will be located at the Division of Industrial Engineering and Management in Uppsala. For more information, see the department's website .

Industrial Engineering and Management is a broad, interdisciplinary subject that spans several sub-areas ranging from organization and management, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as industrial and social marketing within technology and innovation-intensive activities to automation and optimization, to machine design, production and production systems. In this subject area, the role is focused on medical technology innovation and implementation.

The Swedish medical technology industry is a world leader in many areas and employs around 20,000 people with a turnover of around SEK 60 billion per year. A basic prerequisite for these historic successes has been good collaboration between health care, business and academia. In order to gather previously spread activities into a strengthened profile area, Uppsala University has, together with the University Hospital and Region Uppsala, decided on a long-term and cross-faculty investment in medical technology, Medtech Science & Innovation, where basic scientific issues in medical technology are linked to healthcare needs.

The position is also linked to and located at Medtech Science & Innovation. The center has world-class laboratory facilities at its disposal at the Ångström Laboratory, as well as office and meeting rooms in newly renovated premises at the University Hospital. The center is also a national node in the strategic program Medtech4Health, which is financed by Sweden's innovation agency Vinnova.

Description of subject area of the employment: In order for health care and municipal health and social care to remain effective and of a high quality, and to be able to meet the demographic development and the needs of the inhabitants in a better way, a change is required in the entire care chain. A transition to close care means a changed approach where there is a shift in the way of working, e.g. from reactive measures to more proactive and preventive, from passive recipients to active co-creators and from disease to health. A more accessible, closer care, together with new ways of working in care, can mean that the resources in care and nursing are better utilized and thus are sufficient for more people.

As part of this transition, new medical technology solutions will play a major role, including through the multi-professional teams with specialist competence for mobile advanced healthcare conducted outside hospitals that are beginning to be established in several regions, but also by providing patients and relatives with help with e.g. sampling, monitoring, communication and rehabilitation.

The subject area for the employment is medical technology innovation and implementation to enable and carry out advanced healthcare.

  • Teaching, research and administration in industrial engineering and management, focusing on innovation and implementation, especially in areas related to medical technology and advanced distributed care. The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise.

Research Expertise comprises research merits. In addition to academic merits, research merits from other activities, including technology development, may also be taken into account including research merits obtained outside the academy, which includes for example technology development and innovation ability. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in medical technology innovation and implementation.

Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Administrative Expertise is important for the employment and will be given consideration. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality.

Management Expertise is important and will be afforded consideration. Collaborative expertise is demonstrated by the ability and skill of planning, organizing and implementing interaction with the surrounding community. Popular publications, public debate and lectures are examples of forms of interaction with the surrounding community. Other examples of collaboration are patent applications, commercialization and industrial cooperation. The ability to translate knowledge sharing with the surrounding community into activities of importance to the education's development and quality is part of the collaboration expertise.

Other Expertise: If the applicant intends to conduct clinical activities, clinical skill is important for the employment and will be given weight. Clinical skills are demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work involves, among other things, initiatives that improve or streamline health care.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.
