Job description

The new chair of Microbiology is established to further strengthen the current team, which consists of Molecular/ Medical Microbiology (Luirink, Bitter, Houben) and Systems Biology (Bruggeman, Teusink). Together these sections have recently been integrated in a new department, A-LIFE, together with the Ecology and Environmental Health sections.

The candidate must be senior and have a strong research profile with proven ability to attract funding (NWO, EU). A strong, individual research line in the field of Microbiology is required. The quality of the candidate and not the research topic itself is leading. The research topic could be linked to the current themes in the department, at the interface between different themes or represent a completely novel line of research. Potential focus areas include Genetics, Structural Biology, Cell Biology, Synthetic Biology, Evolution, Host-Pathogen relationships, Bacterial communities, Biotechnology and Antimicrobials. Potential connections with the broader interest areas within the A-LIFE department are welcomed but not mandatory.

In addition, the chair will play a key role in educational programs such as the Bsc programs “Biology” and “Biomedical Sciences”, and the MSc programs “Biomolecular Sciences” and “Bioinformatics and Systems Biology”.

Your duties

  • To play a leading role in the research program of the new department
  • To play a central role in shaping and teaching the education portfolio of the relevant BSc and MSc programs
  • To acquire and manage national and international research grants
  • To engage and manage research projects and collaborations with academic, industrial and governmental partners
  • To demonstrate a continuous and creative output publishing in well-respected journals
  • To perform managerial tasks for the department
  • To play an active role in local, national, and international research platforms

Requirements
  • Candidate must hold a PhD degree and a demonstrate a strong track record in the field of interest including well-cited publications in top-10 peer reviewed journals of the field and/or relevant experience gained from research within industry
  • Candidate must have a proven ability and/or potency to attract external grants in order to finance research
  • Candidate must demonstrate strong capabilities of leadership, management, collaboration, innovation, and valorisation
  • Candidate is expected to be an inspiring teacher with a track record in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching programs
  • Candidate must have experience with supervising, motivating, and coaching of PhD and MSc students, postdocs, and technicians
  • Candidate must have a basic qualification in teaching ('BKO') or willingness to attain this within two years after this appointment
  • English fluency is expected and, where appropriate, the candidate should be willing to learn the Dutch language.

What are we offering?

On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a     

  • minimum gross monthly salary of €5,506 (UHD) or a maximum gross monthly salary of € 7,362 (UHD)
  • minimum gross monthly salary of  € 6,099 (HL2) or a maximum gross monthly salary of €8,881 (HL2), ​​​​depending on your education and experience..

The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 1 FTE.

The initial employment contract will be for a period of 1 year, but after a positive evaluation and proven suitability, a permanent contract will be given.

Promising candidates who do not yet meet all mentioned requirements can and should still apply.  Such a candidate, if successful, will be initially appointed as Associate Professor in a tenure track construction for max. 5 years after which, on condition of adequate progress and performance, she/he will be promoted to the rank of Full Professor.
Depending on the seniority of the applicant the new group can be extended with a technician and an assistant professor.
