Associate/Assistant Professor in Mechanical Design and Hydraulics

SDU Mechatronics and the Centre of Industrial Mechanics, part of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg, invites applications for multiple positions as associate or assistant professors in mechanical engineering. Starting date is negotiable.

Unique opportunity
The Centre for Industrial Mechanics is a newly established centre focusing on mechanics in combination with mechatronics. You have the unique opportunity to be a part of the new centre and influence the further development of the centre. We are in the process of building up a mechanical engineering degree and labs to support the educational activities, as well as our research and commercial activities.

Workplace description

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering covers innovation, research, and education spanning from fundamentals to applications of engineering science. All our courses are taught in English reflecting the fact that more than half our students and staff are internationals. The Centre for Industrial Mechanics is located at SDU's beautiful campus in Sønderborg, in the inspiring building of Alsion, which is a centre for science, culture and learning in the heart of Sønderborg and perched on the strait of water separating the island of Als from the mainland. The university has very close relations to the industry in Sønderborg, Southern Denmark and Northern Germany. A significant fraction of the projects in the centre are conducted in close cooperation with the industry, which count world leading companies in growing fields such as e-mobility, automation, climate solutions and energy efficiency.

At the Centre for Industrial Mechanics, research, education, and innovation are performed in teams of scientists and support staff with competences spanning a wide range of fields including applied cyber-physical systems, advanced mechanical systems, modelling and mechatronic prototyping.

To complement our team, we are looking for associate and assistant professors within mechanical design and construction preferably with experience in one or more of the following fields

  • Mechanical design and analysis
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Fluid Power Systems / hydraulics
  • Joining methods: Adhesives, welding etc
  • Material engineering and testing

The ideal candidates will push our research and innovation agenda as part of the team, will take charge of teaching one or more of the following topics: CAD layout including machine drawings, Machine Components, Fluid Power Systems, Mechanical Joining Methods, and will supervise projects at both bachelor and master levels, and depending on position, mentor junior research staff and students.

The candidate must have:

  • PhD degree
  • Great abilities in teaching engineering or physics curricula
  • Excellent track record in research and development
  • Good communication skills in English

  • project and team management experiences

Conditions of employment
Employment as an assistant professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level and is a 3-year temporary position. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Employment as an associate professor is a permanent position according to “funktionærloven” and requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. 

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The assessment process
Both assistant and associate professor positions are subject to an academic assessment by an external expert committee. The committee’s assessment is binding regarding the level of qualification and cannot be overridden by the employment committee.  Read about the Assessment and selection process .
