We are looking for

We are looking for an enthusiastic assistant professor that holds a PhD in Meteorology, Hydrology or Geo Sciences or equivalent, with affinity with urban micro-climate and hydrometeorology. Preferably you have experience with numerical modelling of the urban atmospheric environment and with data assimilation. Your research sofar has provided a research track record in the field expressed in peer-reviewed journal papers, and you also have a clear research vision. Moreover, you have experience or affinity with academic teaching, and the ambition to design and teach courses and course innovation in order to contribute to the teaching portfolio of the departments of Meteorology and Air Quality and Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management. As assistant professor you will get involved in project acquisition, and execute service and management tasks in the (inter)national research community. Good communication (including English writing and speaking) and collaborative skills (networking) are required since within the HERITAGE program Tenure Track assistant professors are expected to develop an interdisciplinary research program.

HERITAGE (HEat Robustness In relation To AGEing cities) is a research programme aiming at detection, reduction and prevention of heat-stress occurring due to ageing of built environmental settings and buildings in Dutch cities, through socio-technical solutions. This programme is a 4TU initiative , connecting the four universities of technology in The Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University and Research.

The Wageningen University contribution to HERITAGE focuses on the understanding of the urban energy and water balance at street and neighborhood scale through the development and evaluation of modelling infrastructure that can blend professional and private surface based hydrometeorological observations, crowdsourcing data and remote sensing observations. The project will benefit from existing cooperation with the AMS-Institute and particularly with the Amsterdam Atmospheric Monitoring Supersite. Research results will act as input to the HERITAGE projects at the other universities.

In this challenging career trajectory:

  • you acquire, lead and implement innovative and creative(inter-) national research projects in the Meteorology and Air Quality Section and the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group;
  • you collaborate with colleagues and supervise PhD students, BSc and MSc theses and you develop and teach courses;
  • you contribute to the further development of the Meteorology and Air Quality Section and the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group.

Depending on your experience, we offer a gross monthly salary of between € 3.974,- and € 5.439,- based on a full-time working week of 38 hours in accordance with the

Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU)

(scale 11).

The Meteorology and Air Quality Group
The Meteorology and Air Quality Group (MAQ) aims to contribute to the further understanding of atmospheric processes and their relevance for weather, air quality and climate. We do research on a variety of topics and horizontal scales.

As a university group we are responsible for the education in subjects of Meteorology and Air Quality at the BSc and MSc level and the training of PhD candidates. Students are guided in the basics of Weather and Climate, Forecasting, Turbulence and Dispersion, Boundary-Layer Meteorology and Chemistry, Atmospheric Dynamics, Desertification and Land use, and many other subjects.

The Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group
The HWM group is a vibrant, collaborative team of young and mid-career researchers who work in the field of Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management . The HWM group currently consists of 11 faculty members, 1 special professor, 3 postdocs and 26 PhD candidates supervised by current staff. The HWM group is part of the cluster for Climate, Water and Society (CWS), a new cluster of chair groups within the overarching WIMEK Graduate School (www.wimek.wur.nl ) and the Environmental Sciences Group (ESG).

The group is efficiently organised and supported by dedicated secretarial, financial and HR advisors. The HWM group and student community are largely international and the courses of the group are taught in English.
