Assistant Professor - Urban design for local climate types

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 15 Nov 2022

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) on Urban Design for Local Climate Types in 4TU Project.

We invite applicants to join our international and interdisciplinary team of passionate and ambitious academic professionals at the Department of Urbanism, at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft. One of the world's leading institutes in the field, ranked 2nd in the QS World University by Subject-Ranking. We are looking for a motivated colleague to strengthen our Section Environmental Technology and Design (ETD), and to join the 4 TU HERITAGE team.

HERITAGE (HEat Robustness In relation To AGEing cities) is a research program aiming at the detection, reduction and prevention of heat-stress occurring due to the ageing of built environmental settings and buildings in Dutch cities through socio-technical solutions. This programme is a 4TU initiative connecting the four universities of technology in the Netherlands: the Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University and Research.

We are looking for a colleague to develop an independent research line within the 4TU HERITAGE programme focusing on the relationship between urban morphology and outdoor and indoor heat in the context of climate change. We specifically welcome applications from candidates with an interest and experience in linking data-driven research methods (e.g. clustering classification methods, microclimate simulations and on-site measurements) with spatial design on different scales. This approach is instrumental for the assessment of climate adaptation measures as well as the development of design guidelines for heat mitigation tailored to different urban morphologies.

As an assistant professor on a tenure track you will co-supervise PhD students and contribute to education, which includes teaching and developing courses on topics related to climate adaptation and methodology, as well as existing courses in the Urbanism and Faculty curriculum, at BSc and MSc levels. In addition, every academic staff is expected to contribute to management and service tasks within the department, faculty and university.

The section of Environmental Technology and Design (ETD) contributes to inter- and transdisciplinary, context-driven and problem/solution-focused research and education for the sake of a better environment. It involves a collaborative design and engineering approach, with social-and environmental-based methods and techniques as operative instruments, as well as the development and application of advanced urban data science and geospatial information technologies to support this primary aim. Research and education blend environmental technology, urban ecology, citizen participation and environmental behaviour at different scales. There is a strong emphasis on the interaction of these fields in terms of theories, methods and techniques, as well as their application via concepts, strategies and spatial interventions, as a significant part of ETD's research portfolio concerns applied science for and often with public and private partners.

The successful candidate for this position has:

  • A strong interest in heat stress and socio-technical solutions.
  • A PhD in Urbanism, Environmental Sciences, Design Engineering, Built Environment or a comparable domain.
  • Postdoctoral research experience.
  • A strong international profile, evidenced by international work experience and network.
  • Ability to conduct high-quality interdisciplinary academic research, evidenced by a strong list of internationally peer-reviewed publications and contributions to books.
  • Preferably experience in the management of research projects, grant proposal writing, and supervision of PhD students.
  • Experience with teaching in Urbanism or related fields, and the ambition to acquire University Teaching Qualifications within a short period of time.
  • Experience in supervising students and the ability to motivate students.
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • A demonstrated proficiency in the written and spoken use of the English language as well as the willingness to learn Dutch, and good presentation and communication skills.

TU Delft creates equal opportunities and encourages women to apply.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment.
