The Faculty of Law (
https://www.rug.nl/rechten/) of the University of Groningen is a modern, (inter)nationally oriented institution which builds on a longstanding tradition of more than four centuries. The faculty has the ambition to measure itself with the best law faculties in Europe. It offers several (inter)national bachelor and master programmes and with 5000 students and almost 500 staff members, the faculty forms a vibrant community.
The position(s) are hosted at the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies as part of the STeP Research Group. As of the academic year 2020-2021, the Faculty of Law has launched a new track on Technology Law in the LLB in International and European Law. The Technology Law track is designed in light of the understanding that technology operates across jurisdictions and, as a result, regulatory responses have to occur at the interface between domestic, regional and international law. As part of this track several new courses on different aspects of technology law are being offered in English.
Job description
The prospective Assistant Professor(s) will have the following primary responsibilities:
- teach topics in the area of technology law in the bachelor and master programmes
- develop new courses in evolving areas of technology law such as artificial intelligence
- supervising bachelor and master theses
- contributing to project-based research
- conduct research in areas of technology law
- engage in the development of research projects.
This position is open for person(s), preferably with an interdisciplinary background, able to teach in different areas of Technology Law and having a very good understanding of technology itself. The candidate(s) must be willing and able to teach technological concepts to legal students in an accessible manner.
Qualifications
In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates who have:
- a PhD in Law (or have a defense date planned) in Technology Law, or related fields
- demonstrable knowledge of specific areas of technology law, such as, cybercrime, e-commerce, intellectual property, digital forensics, artificial intelligence, market regulation, data protection
- knowledge of computer science, artificial intelligence techniques
- preferably have experience with online/hybrid teaching and/or supervision of students
- relevant teaching experience
- possession of a basic university teaching qualification or preparedness to acquire this qualification within a reasonable timeframe
- demonstrable organisational and communicative skills
- excellent command of English
- publications commensurate with the stage at which the candidate finds themselves in their career, indicative of the ability to publish in leading academic journals
- experience with the development of research projects will be an advantage.

Conditions of employment
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 2,960 (salary scale 10) and € 6,181 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full time position
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
- an 8.3% year-end bonus
- participation in a pension scheme for employees.
The appointment will be made for an initial fixed term period of 18 months, with the possibility for a permanent appointment upon positive evaluation.
Preferred date of entry into employment is 1 September 2022, or as soon as possible after that date.
