Offer Description
The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is looking for an assistant professor (Universitair Docent) to conduct research and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics. The LUCL expects the assistant professor to support and expand the current lines of research of the group of faculty members and PhD students in Psycho-/Neuro-linguistics and to help develop new approaches in research and education.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, (co-)teach, and co-ordinate courses in Psycholinguistics, Neurolinguistics, and Statistics in the BA (Language and Cognition track) and (Res)MA Linguistics programmes. Participate in teaching in the Minor Brain and Cognition courses;
- Supervise BA and (Res)MA theses;
- Co-supervise PhD students
- Play an active role in recruiting BA and MA students by contributing to open days, orientation and information sessions;
- Fulfill administrative duties within the BA and/or (Res)MA Linguistics programmes, the Minor Brain and Cognition, the LUCL institute and/or the Faculty of Humanities;
- Conduct research in psycholinguistics and/or neurolinguistics and present the results in the form of publications, conference presentations and other means to academics, professional/societal partners and wider audiences;
- Acquire project funding at the national, European or international level;

Selection criteria
- You hold a PhD degree in Psycholinguistics and/or Neurolinguistics;
- Your research preferably has affinity with linguistic theories;
- You are an experienced and dedicated teacher with a strong academic teaching record, both at the BA and at the MA level, as demonstrated by teaching evaluations;
- You have an excellent research track record, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications in international journals as well as presentations at major conferences;
- You have demonstrated the ability to acquire funding for research projects at the national, international, or European level;
- You have hands-on experience in conducting behavioural experiments, EEG experiments as well as some other experimental method; and you are open to applying new experimental methods;
- You have demonstrable knowledge of modern statistics and proficiency in the statistical programming language R or a different programming language;
- Your research preferably combines well with fields such as Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, or Robotics;
- You are willing and able to participate in collaborations between researchers at LUCL, and to actively contribute to a thriving experimental linguistics community;
- You support and put into practice the principles of Open Science.
- You preferably conduct research (also) on languages other than typical Western languages such as English, and Dutch;
- You have C2 proficiency in English (applicants are expected to teach, speak and write in English and, within two years, also in Dutch (C1 level)).

Terms and conditions
We offer an 0.8 FTE temporary appointment of 18 months, starting September 2024. After 18 months this position may lead to a permanent appointment depending on good performance evaluations. Salary ranges from €4.332- to €5.929- gross per month (pay scale 11) based on fulltime employment in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Depending on qualifications, you may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until you fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities.
