Organisation

The basic unit of Pedagogy is part of the department of Pedagogy and Educational Sciences, at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, University of Groningen. The unit contributes to a wide range of courses on Bachelor and Master level, including the Pedagogical Sciences Master track Youth0-21, Society, and Policy. In terms of research, the unit hosts two expertise groups: Education in Culture and Youth Studies. The post holder will join the latter group, chaired by Tina Kretschmer. Members of the Youth Studies group conduct research on questions concerning LGBT mental health, genetically informed research on social development, youth participation, and youth in higher education. The methodological focus of the group is quantitative, but we also welcome members who would bring in qualitative research expertise. Members of the group have experience in acquiring competitive grants from NWO and ERC and will support the post holder in applying for personal and other grants. We study issues relating to human behaviour, and the relationships between people and society as a whole. This includes the study of how people function under normal circumstances, but also of the problems encountered by individuals or groups, and how to resolve or prevent these. Our Faculty employs about 650 employees.


Job description

The Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences of the University of Groningen invites applicants for a permanent assistant professorship position in Pedagogy with an emphasis on youth research.

The position combines teaching and research in the field of Pedagogy and Youth Studies. In teaching, candidates are expected to teach substantive and methodology courses in the Bachelor and Master programmes (Dutch and English). These include a module on Content Analysis, and may also include courses in the Pedagogical Sciences Master track Youth0-21, Society, and Policy and the University Minor Challenging Youth, as well as the supervision of Bachelor and Master thesis students. Participation in managerial committees related to the organisation of the programmes and department is expected.

In research, the candidate is expected to conduct research on youth-related themes. The candidate will be encouraged to develop a research funding plan allowing them to attract external funding in the short/medium term. Support in developing an independent research line and funding strategy will be provided by senior members of the expertise group.


Qualifications

• a completed PhD in a relevant discipline
• relevant teaching experience
• good publication record in international journals
• experience in applying for funding
• the ability to communicate and teach in Dutch and English
• excellent social and communicative skills and ability to work in groups.


Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,807 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,922 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position.
• excluding 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus, participation in a pension scheme for employees and excellent secondary benefits.

The base for this position is a temporary contract for 12 or 18 months with a view on a permanent contract, with an appointment size of 1.0 FTE. The concrete content and duration of the temporary employment contract (12 or 18 months) depend on the candidate's previous employment history.

The appointee will ideally commence on 1 January 2022, with the possibility to start earlier.
