As Assistant Professor of Sociology at Radboud University, you will join a diverse group of dedicated scholars, shape the field of family sociology or demography, and flourish in a friendly and vibrant academic community.
We are looking for an assistant professor in family sociology or demography. Themes of interest may include the work-family interplay; marriage, divorce, and fertility patterns; partner relationships; or family solidarity and informal care. Additional fields of interest, such as sustainability, environmentalism, diversity or inequality would be an asset. An equal amount of your academic time will be allocated to teaching (50%) and research (50%).
As a lecturer, you will contribute to introductory, general and more specialist undergraduate and graduate courses in Sociology (in Dutch). Furthermore you will supervise students during learning projects and thesis research. You will be teaching courses such as 'Keuzes en opvattingen in gezinnen (BA3), and will develop a new course on 'Inequality and climate change (BA2/3)' in a national Sociology minor programme. As a researcher, you should have experience in and in-depth knowledge of research in family sociology. You will be expected to have expertise in and affinity for advanced statistical techniques. You will work closely together with researchers from the sociology department embracing team science, as well as with national and international scholars. You will publish your research results in international journals, write grant proposals, and conduct impactful research in collaboration with societal partners.
Profile
  • You have a PhD degree in sociology or an associated social science field.
  • You have expertise in delivering courses at the Bachelor's and/or Master's levels, and supervising students during learning or thesis projects.
  • You have a university teaching qualification (BKO) or the willingness to acquire such a certificate.
  • You have developed an independent research line in sociology.
  • You have an excellent track record in academic research, as evidenced by publications in international academic journals.
  • You have good social, communication and organisational skills.
  • You have knowledge of, and are familiar with, advanced research methods and statistical techniques.
  • You have experience in the acquisition of external research funding.
  • You have experience with communicating results of scientific research to the general public and other relevant actors.
  • You have an excellent command of spoken and written Dutch and English (C1 level) or the willingness to acquire sufficient proficiency in these languages within two years.

We are
This position will be embedded in the Sociology department of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Sociology department hosts the Bachelor programme 'Sociology', the Master programme 'Sociology: Policy and Applied Research', and participates in the Research Master's programme 'Social Cultural Sciences'.
The overall aim of the Radboud Social Cultural Research institute (RSCR) is to contribute innovative knowledge to the scientific and social community through comparative research. The rationale behind this focus on comparative research is that it puts societal phenomena and processes into perspective and therefore provides insights into, and explanations of, similarities and differences. RSCR consists of two research groups in (a) sociology and (b) cultural anthropology and development studies. Both groups host researchers from the Gender & Diversity group.

  • It concerns an employment for 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
  • You will be offered a job as assistant professor. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,974 to €6,181 (salary scale 11 or 12), based on a 38-hour working week. Monthly salary will also depend on previous education, competencies and number of years of relevant work experience. (salary scale 11or 12 ).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • It concerns a temporary employment for 1 year with the possibility of a permanent employment.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services . Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
