Are you an enthusiastic philosopher of science with a strong interest in the philosophy of physics? And do the broader ethical and societal dimensions of the natural sciences fascinate you? Then this exciting opportunity to join our institute as an assistant professor could be for you. You will be part of a newly established research group where you can exchange ideas with historians, philosophers and mathematical physicists.
The Institute for Science in Society (ISiS) invites candidates for a new position as (initially) Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Science, who will strengthen the teaching and research expertise of our Institute and whose research will contribute to the new project on determinism, randomness and emergence in modern physics led by Spinoza laureate Prof. Klaas Landsman. Accordingly, you should be well versed in the philosophy of science, especially in relation to modern physics, and have high-level expertise in one or more of the following areas: quantum theory, general relativity, and/or statistical mechanics. Moreover, as a philosopher you have a broad interest in conceptual as well as ethical and societal issues related to science and technology. You are willing and able to work in an interdisciplinary team and collaborate both with social scientists (at ISiS and elsewhere) and natural scientists (at the Faculty of Science and elsewhere).
As an Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Science you will teach courses in philosophy of science and technology to science students at BSc and MSc levels. In addition, you will supervise or co-supervise students writing their theses, for example MSc students in our Science in Society programme and physics, mathematics or philosophy students writing on interdisciplinary topics. Next to teaching, you will carry out high-quality, internationally visible research. You will be expected to publish in reputable international journals and attract external research funding from governmental, European and/or private institutions. Moreover, you will supervise or co-supervise PhD candidates, build international networks, and contribute to management and administration tasks.

Profile
  • You hold a PhD degree in either philosophy with a strong inclination towards physics, or in physics with a strong philosophical angle, preferably with a focus on the philosophy of modern physics.
  • You have the ability to carry out high-quality research that fits the theme (as shown by publications in internationally recognised journals).
  • You have teaching experience (preferably in philosophical education for science students) and experience with supervising thesis writing.
  • You have a demonstrable interest in ISiS's mission to analyse, assess and improve the societal embedding of science and technology.
  • You have a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or equivalent, or the willingness to obtain such a qualification within two years.
  • You have excellent English language skills and a willingness to learn Dutch within two years (if applicable).
