Job description

The assistant professor to be appointed will cooperate closely with the full professor of Hindu spirituality and society and with the international ecosystem of research scholars in the field. For this position the focus is on an analysis of and reflection on the contribution of sources from Hindu scriptures for the field of Hindu spirituality in its various domains in society. In accordance with the self-understanding of the Hindu community, the wisdom of the Hindu tradition is seen as an inclusive, integrative and comprehensive philosophy of life that should be given shape in concrete practices. The teaching and research of the assistant professor is first and foremost focused at the concrete practices of Hindu spirituality as derived from classical Hindu sources of spirituality. The key question is how the wisdom from Hindu scriptures, rituals, and practices can be made fruitful for today's multi-religious society and multi-cultural society.

Your duties

  • co-creating and coordinating new educational components within the chair group, such as electives for international bachelor's and master's students and postgraduate masterclasses for professionals
  • co-creating the research programme of the Chair Group and conducting research within this programme for scientific and professional publications
  • co-creating and coordinating master classes for professionals (executives and post-graduates and Hindu Pandits, Hindu Chaplains)
  • acting as second supervisor in research projects carried out by PhD candidates
  • carrying out valorisation task, obtaining funding for research, writing research proposals and publications for the benefit of the Hindu community


  • the candidate must have a PhD on a relevant subject within religious studies or the social sciences and international academic publications on Hindu concepts
  • the candidate is familiar with traditional Hindu sources
  • the candidate has educational experience at Bachelor's and Master's level, whereas experience with education at postgraduate level is an advantage
  • the candidate is able to lecture in English; being able to teach in Dutch as well (or being willing to learn doing so) is an advantage
  • the candidate has obtained the BKO (elementary teaching qualification) or is prepared to do so

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,746 (scale 11)

and a maximum €5,826 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.5 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.
