Job description

The Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Geosciences of Utrecht University is looking for an Assistant Professor, as part of the ambition to further develop teaching and research activities of the Economic Geography section. 
The Economic Geography section specializes in teaching and research connected to the Evolutionary Economic Geography programme, where staff members are internationally recognized leaders. Current projects and expertise cover topics with scientific and societal relevance, including regional inequality, sustainability and regional innovation policies, resilience of regions to crises like COVID, institutions and regional development. The section also specializes in quantitative methods and seeks to further develop its expertise in artificial intelligence and data science.
We are looking for a candidate with the enthusiasm and ability to connect people and themes in both research and teaching. The Economic Geography section is highly collaborative and welcomes candidates that are equally open to collaboration and teamwork. We believe in a balance between individual and collective achievements. That’s why we both assess on individual and on team performances. We stimulate inclusive leadership at all levels.
In terms of research, you will develop new research lines that can complement and extend current specializations. You will also be embedded in our Urban Futures research programme focusing on transitions to socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable cities and regions. Your research connects with (one of) Utrecht University’s strategic themes, in particular Pathways to Sustainability, and Institutions for Open Societies.
You will teach in our Bachelor and Master programmes and take a leading role in coordinating and innovating existing courses, while also initiating new educational activities.
As a senior colleague, a key task is also to contribute to the acquisition and execution of externally funded projects. This task will be related to your ability to create societal impact with your research and teaching, for instance by engaging with regional and national policymakers and/or actively contributing to societal debates.
The position involves 50% teaching and 50% research time. Core tasks include:

  • teaching our Bachelor’s and Master’s courses;
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis supervision;
  • coordinating and developing innovative educational activities;
  • research, project acquisition and publishing;
  • carrying out management tasks and helping create an inclusive and diverse workplace;
  • creating societal impact and engagement with societal stakeholders.

Requirements

Our preferred candidate should have demonstrated experience in research acquisition, publications and international teaching, as well as proven skills in management, collaboration and teambuilding. We are looking for candidates with an innovative research line that can complement the strengths of the group and department.
You will strengthen education and research in the Department of Human Geography & Spatial Planning. For this, you are an inspiring teacher to Bachelor's and Master's students and have, or are willing to obtain in the near future, a Basic teaching qualification ( BKO). You are a strong team player with good communication and networking skills, who is focused on achieving multidisciplinary research targets and participating in the acquisition of funding for research projects. 
We are looking for an assistant professor with the following qualifications:

  • a doctoral degree (PhD) in economic geography, or a closely related discipline;
  • a proven expertise in research, including publications in international journals;
  • experience with applying for competitive research projects;
  • proven experience in teaching;
  • established connections to relevant academic partners as well as to stakeholders in society;
  • social and communication skills and the ability and motivation to collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines;
  • fluency in English (C1 level), a passive knowledge of the Dutch language is welcome, together with the willingness to acquire a good active knowledge of the Dutch language within two years.

Your vision on teaching and research will specifically be considered by the selection committee. Publication track record, teaching record, acquired research funding and leadership experience will be weighed against the number of years of academic experience, also considering (parental) leave and part-time appointments.

We intend to fill the position on a permanent basis in an international working environment (0,8 - 1.0 FTE) The initial appointment is for 18 months 1 After positive evaluation,  the position will be made permanent  The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €3,974 and €5,439 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. Depending on qualification and experience, salary scale 12 (€4,814 - €6,181) is negotiable for this position if you meet the required criteria for the higher scale. The Department also runs a large and highly appreciated Bachelor's programme and is part of the Netherlands Graduate School of Urban and Regional Research for PhD candidates. Unique characteristics of the department are the attention for innovations within teaching methods and its strong involvement in the transdisciplinary sustainability research theme.
