Job description
eLaw, the center for law and digital technologies at Leiden University is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic assistant professor in the area of Law and Technology to strengthen our team. eLaw is a multidisciplinary research institute that brings together a unique combination of knowledge and experience in the area of legal, ethical, societal and technological aspects of regulating the internet and other digital technologies in an inspiring research environment. As assistant professor, you will be involved in education and research activities.
One of your tasks in education will be the academic coordination of our advanced master program on Law and Digital Technologies. The academic coordinator manages the program team (consisting of the program director, program coordinator, and program assistant). The academic coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the curriculum (with teaching staff and the program director), and is the main point of contact for students in academic matters.
You will also develop and teach courses in the area of law and digital technologies, particularly for our advanced master program, which attracts students from all around the world. Your focus will be on technology regulation (particularly regulatory theory and governance) and on regulating online platforms. Part of the educational tasks is also to supervise thesis students.
As for research, you will be able to dedicate part of your time to advance the research on different topics concerning Law and Digital Technologies. You will be able to develop a personal research profile that can complement the eLaw research strategy. The expectation is that you can author and co-author publications in international academic journals and participate in international conferences. Also, you will contribute to the writing of research proposals at the national and EU level.
Key responsibilities

• Managing the program team of the advanced master program;
• Managing the program curriculum and coordinating the team of lecturers;
• Communication with the master program students on academic matters;
• Developing and teaching courses in the area of law and digital technologies, particularly in the area of regulatory theory and platformisation of the Internet;
• Supervising thesis projects of master students;
• Publishing in professional and (international, peer-reviewed) scientific journals;

Selection criteria

• A completed PhD in the field of law and digital technologies. Candidates who have not yet completed their PhD but have an approved manuscript can also apply. Candidates without an approved manuscript are not eligible for this position;
• Management skills, preferably demonstrated by experience in managing small teams;
• Experience in working in multidisciplinary and/or international teams, including sensitivity and inclusiveness regarding cultural differences among staff and students;
• Experience in teaching, preferable proven by a BKO (University Teaching Qualification);
• Excellent research and writing qualities, demonstrated by (international, peer-reviewed) publications;
• Experience in submitting research proposals to grant organizations;
• Excellent communications skills, spoken and written, team player;
• Excellent English, spoken and written; command of Dutch and other languages is an advantage.

Terms and conditions
This is a 0.8-1.0 fte assistant professor position. Start date can be discussed, but preferably in January 2023. This is a permanent position, but the initial period of employment in this position is for 1 year. This will be extended or transformed into a permanent position if the employee performs well.
Salary range from € 3974.- to € 5439.- gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Salary scale depends on education and experience.
