Job description

Are you a researcher with a strong focus on multi-physical numerical modeling technique?  Would you like to be part of one of the leading institutes in electromechanics research?  Your research will be contributing to specialized, unconventional, and high-performing electromechanical actuation systems for high-tech semicon, medical, transport, and energy conversion systems.  In this position, your research will keep pushing the physical limits of such actuation systems to meet and realize the ever-increasing demands from industry and society.

Electromechanics and Power Electronics Group (EPE)

The EPE group is one of the nine research groups of the Department of Electrical Engineering. The group is the main center for research in electromechanical power conversion and power electronics in the Netherlands. The four research tracks of the group are high-tech motion systems and robotics, power electronics systems, smart mobility, and advanced modeling. Furthermore, the group is actively participating in the EAISI program as well as being one of the founders of the Cyber-Physical Systems Center (CPSe) in which all computation and mechatronic knowledge of TU/e will be bundled for tackling problems around e-grids, e-mobility, and high-tech systems applications.

This group has the most advanced electromechanics and power electronics laboratories in the Netherlands (680+ m2 floor space). It contains modern facilities for testing and validation of electromechanical and power electronic systems including, various permanent magnet and reluctance rotary and spherical motors, highly accurate linear and planar magnetic levitation systems, high-voltage, and superconducting actuators.

The research output of the group is well known for the state-of-the-art numerical modeling techniques for both 2D and 3D systems. These are based on harmonic models, magnetic charge models, magnetic equivalent circuits, spectral elements, isogeometric analysis, and hybrid combinations of these models.

Position

The EPE group is looking for an assistant professor (tenure track) who will perform research into advanced cyber-physical electromechanical systems with a strong focus on multi-physical numerical modeling. The tasks are to:

  • Carry out fundamental and applied research at the forefront of multi-physical numerical modeling of electromechanical devices under strong nonlinear dynamics as well as the topology optimization of such systems.
  • Contribute to the acquisition and management of (inter)national research projects.
  • Cooperate with industrial and academic partners.
  • Teach and supervise students on all academic levels: BSc, MSc, PDEng, and PhD levels.
  • Publish in renowned scientific journals and conferences.

Job requirements
  • PhD degree in computational electromechanics, electromagnetics, or applied physics, preferably with a focus on modeling complex multi-physical systems involving electromagnetics, solid and fluid mechanics, as well as complex heat transfer mechanisms.
  • Minimum 2 years post-doc or, industrial experience.
  • Proven experience with numerical modeling techniques for the design of advanced electromagnetic devices (e.g. Fourier modeling, BEM, FVM, FEM, SEM, IGA).
  • Good programming skills (Matlab, Python, C) and knowledge of real-time control systems environments (dSPACE).
  • Teaching experience at a bachelor-level, supervision experience at master level.
  • Excellent proficiency (written and verbal) in English.

Conditions of employment
  • A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the autonomy to develop your own research line and participate in the curriculum of the department.
  • You will have free access to high-quality training programs for academic leadership, the university teaching qualification program, research and valorization competences, and a dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • Female candidates are eligible for the Irene Curie fellowship.
  • Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as the Dual Career Opportunity program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children day care and sports facilities.
