Job description

We are looking for you as our new faculty member to expand our academic staff in the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science (ISW) of the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The department’s research and teaching activities are organized in three programs: ‘Social Policy and Public Health’, ‘Youth in Changing Cultural Contexts’ and ‘Migration, Cultural Diversity, and Ethnic Relations’.
As assistant professor you contribute to the research and teaching of the Social Policy and Public Health programme. This programme is concerned with three broad domains: work, care and participation; health behaviors, outcomes and services; and sustainability behaviours and transitions. Across these domains, the programme addresses issues of social determinants and inequity, design and impact of social policies and interventions, global health and wellbeing, and ethics, justice and engagement in research and social policy. Our research encompasses and combines quantitative survey research, including longitudinal analyses and international comparisons, qualitative research, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussion, and experimental studies in the lab and the field.
The position consists of a common combination of teaching activities (60%) and research activities (40%). In case you wish to focus your career more on teaching, an appointment comprised of 70% teaching and 30% research is also possible.
If you have expertise in advanced qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods research and data analysis methods, you would be a great addition to our team. Regarding qualitative research we are especially interested in candidates familiar with a range of qualitative approaches and the ability to advice on their suitability, and knowledge of epistemological stances and the role of theory, positionality and reflexivity in qualitative research. With respect to quantitative research we are especially looking for expertise in (complex) longitudinal data analysis, advanced multi-level analysis or machine learning methods of text analysis. People with other methodological expertise are also very much invited to respond.
The core tasks of the position include:

  • independently teaching Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in the curriculum of Interdisciplinary Social Science;
  • educational management, including the coordination of courses at Bachelor’s and Master’s degree level, coordinating educational (innovation) projects;
  • active involvement in the continuous improvement and development of the Interdisciplinary Social Science courses and curriculum;
  • bringing additional qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods expertise to the curriculum;
  • undertaking your own research aligned with the programme Social Policy and Public Health, and publishing (inter)nationally in a relevant domain;
  • generating additional and external funding to extend the research of the programme Social Policy and Public Health;
  • translating and communicating research findings and scientific insights to different types of audiences, including scientific, professional and community audiences.

      • You hold (or have nearly obtained) a PhD degree in a domain of behavioural or social science, or a similar or related field.
      • You have expertise in quantitative, qualitative or mixed behavioural or social science methods.
      • You have experience in teaching, (co-)developing and (co-)coordinating academic courses.
      • You hold a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are willing to acquire this qualification in the near future.
      • You’re fluent in spoken and written English at an academic level.
      • You’re a creative and productive researcher, as evidenced in recent publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
      • You are fluent in spoken and written Dutch or willing to learn Dutch. We believe that understanding and being able to speak and write Dutch is essential to connect and communicate with students and colleagues. We offer free Dutch language courses. Teaching in Dutch will be part of your tasks (in due course).

      Conditions of employment

      We offer a temporary position (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) for one year in an international work environment. After a positive evaluation, a permanent position can be offered. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between € 3.974,00 and € 6.181,00 per month for full-time employment (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement of Universities in the Netherlands). Salaries are supplemented by a holiday bonus of 8% per year and an annual year-end bonus of 8.3%.
