Job description

As an assistant professor in Sociology at VU you contribute to our innovative academic education and societally relevant research.
You teach in the bachelor and master programmes Sociology and in the research master of the Faculty of Social Sciences. We use a transdisciplinary perspective and engage students with societal stakeholders in courses and theses.
Your research connects to one of the five research programs of PARIS , the research program on societal participation of the department of Sociology . We study current societal issues from a sociological perspective. We offer you the opportunity to further expand your own research line. Plus, we encourage innovation in our education, inspired by your research.
We are looking for an Assistant Professor who is already more advanced in research and teaching. We offer you a temporary employment, with prospects to a permanent contract after 18 months.
Your duties

  • you develop, coordinate and teach bachelor and (research) master level courses, mainly in Dutch
  • you further develop your own innovative empirical research line 
  • you are active in acquiring external research funding
  • you are involved in the supervision of PhD candidates
  • you perform management tasks and/or take part in committees
  • you adhere to principles of team science and open science

Requirements
  • you have a PhD in social sciences, and experience as an assistant professor
  • you have didactic qualities, as proven by a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) and positive teaching evaluations
  • you have several years of experience with teaching sociological and/or methodological courses
  • you have a track record of high quality research in a sociological domain
  • you are committed to research with high societal impact and valorization strategy
  • you can teach in Dutch and in English at C1 level

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €6,181 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university ranking system (UFO) of Assistant Professor 2 and is open for at least 0,8 fte. In the first two years the ratio of teaching and research is 50/50. Starting in the position of Assistant Professor 1 and the option of promotion to Associate Professor is negotiable. The initial employment contract will affect a period of 18 months.

About the department
The department of Sociology  hosts over 50 fte of academic staff and organizes the bachelor and master education in sociology, as well as courses in methodology in social sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences, and courses for the Faculty research master on Societal Resilience. Our bachelor program is recently renewed to include transdisciplinary courses in which students learn from involvement with societal stakeholders. Education in the methodology of social sciences is also undergoing a series of innovations to meet the new challenges of working with big and small data. The Bachelor and Master programs in Sociology deal with the themes of diversity, social inequality, social cohesion, conflicts and change. The research of the department is organized in the research program Participation in Society (PARIS ) that includes five theme groups: ‘Social Context of Aging’, ‘Social Inequality in the Lifecourse’, ‘Identities, Diversity and Inclusion’, ‘Social Conflict and Change’ en ‘Philanthropic Studies’.
