Job description

The department of Computer Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is looking for an assistant professor in security research with a focus on practical aspects of computer security. As an assistant professor, you will complement our well-known VUSec Systems Security Group (

) in any synergetic area. We value collaboration and we strive to shape the future of the field with high-impact research.

Example areas of interest include (but are not limited to) software/firmware/hardware security, network security, web security, mobile/IoT security, language security, malware analysis, secure/adversarial machine learning, usable security, cyber-physical security, etc. Our hiring philosophy is to hire the best candidate for the position rather than hiring someone in a narrowly defined research area.

Your duties

• you pursue an active research program
• you teach introductory and advanced classes at bachelor and master levels (typically 1 Master course and 1 Bachelor course)
• you supervise undergraduate and graduate students
• You perform small management tasks within the department. A typical breakdown is 20% management, 40% teaching, and 40% research.
  

• you have a PhD in a computer science related area
• you have a strong international research profile, with excellent (international) visibility in the research community. This is for instance evidenced by publications in top venues, real-world impact, prestigious awards/grants, citations, etc.
• you complement the existing research group in systems security. With your background, the security cluster offers a more complete palette in security research.
• you have a track record in teaching computer science courses at university level
• you can motivate and inspire students and colleagues
• you have good interpersonal communication skills
• you have English language proficiency

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €4,332 (scale 11) and a maximum €5,929 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile of Assistant Professor is based on the university job ranking system (UFO). In order to attract foreign employees, the Netherlands offers a tax incentive known as the 30% ruling and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

This is a career track position; the initial appointment will be for a period of 1.5 years, which will be turned into a tenured position after the initial period, if the performance indicators agreed at the start of the appointment are met.

The Computer Systems section
Since the 1970s, the Computer Systems section at Vrije Universiteit has continuously enjoyed a world-class reputation in research. It produced some of the best-known computer systems researchers in the world and is known as the birthplace of CVS and MINIX (which later led to Linux and a few years ago was adopted by Intel for its Management Engine running in every modern x86 processor).

Following this tradition, VUSec, the systems security group, has focused on high-impact research from its inception. For instance, it published a large number of research papers at top venues with results that directly impacted the software of all major browser and operating systems vendors, and the microcode in almost all Intel processors. In addition, it graduated a string of highly talented systems security students—winning the Dennis M. Ritchie Doctoral Dissertation Award, the ACM SIGSAC Doctoral Dissertation Award, and the Roger Needham Ph.D. Award for best Ph.D. in computer systems in Europe no fewer than six times.
