Job description

You will be embedded in the Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship & Marketing (ITEM) group . ITEM’s research program focuses on understanding and improving innovation processes within firms, organizations, and institutions—typically in a high-tech context. Innovation is a key driver of growth by advancing technological progress and generating economic as well as societal value. In the context of open innovation and the rise of increasingly complex innovation ecosystems, new product development is no longer the exclusive playground of individual firms. Instead, collaboration with external parties (e.g., suppliers, customers) is required not only to successfully launch new products and keep pace with competitors, but also to contribute to society’s grand challenges.

As a successful candidate, you are able to study such complex processes, within and between organizations, to develop rich theory and practical implications on the underlying mechanisms that drive complex innovation processes. Moreover, by being a scholar that thrives in a multidisciplinary context, you contribute by actively connecting the various focal areas of ITEM by being a boundary spanner between the various domains, including new product development, innovation ecosystems, and marketing.

The ITEM group has an opening for an assistant professor who wants to contribute to its research program and teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. As a successful candidate, you will be involved in conducting top-level academic research to be published in high-quality scholarly journals—such as, but not limited to Research Policy and Journal of Product Innovation Management. You will be involved in developing and lecturing courses on new product development, innovation strategy, and innovation ecosystems, and supervising bachelor and master thesis students.

Moreover, you are expected to connect to one or more of the departmental themes , including, but not limited to ‘Sustainability and Circularity’ and ‘Supply Chain Management’—and the related university themes , such as ‘Health’ or ‘Smart Mobility’—and by doing so create the opportunity to work with other top scholars active in those domains.

In addition, you should be active in acquiring external research funding (e.g., industry, NWO, EU) and be visible in international academic networks. The TU/e is situated in one of the leading high-tech regions of the world, which provides ample opportunities for excellent researchers in the field of innovation seeking to make a societal as well as academic impact.

Job requirements
  • You have a PhD (or expect to obtain your PhD in six months) in innovation management, technology management, product engineering, product development or another innovation related domain.
  • Preferably, you have proven experience with various research methods, such as quantitative research, qualitative research, and simulation modelling.
  • You have the ability to conduct high-quality research, demonstrated in a successfully completed PhD thesis and publications in leading innovation journals.
  • You have the potential and ambition to become a high-level innovation scholar, known for cross-disciplinary work.
  • You have a passion for teaching, demonstrated by high teaching evaluations and (willingness to obtain) the University Teaching Qualification.
  • You have a creative personality, dedicated to multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • You have good communication and leadership skills.
  • You are highly proficient in the English language, both in writing and speaking.
  • Finally, you are a team player and prepared to play an active citizenship role within the ITEM-group.

Conditions of employment
  • A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, with the autonomy to develop your own research line and participate in the curriculum of the department.
  • Embedding in a strong inter-disciplinary group that entails 24 faculty members. In addition, a group of 21 PhD students is affiliated with this group.
  • The initial contract is at least five years (here is an intention to expedite the tenure decision in the near future).  If you have a more senior profile, you will receive a tailor-made career proposal.
  • You will have free access to high-quality training programs for academic leadership, the university teaching qualification program, research and valorization competences, and a dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the annual salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, childcare, moving expenses, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as the Dual Career Opportunity program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children daycare and sports facilities.
