Assistant Professor in Geography of the Digital Transition (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) |
Job description |
The Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University is looking for an Assistant Professor to strengthen research and teaching around the topic Geography of the Digital Transition. Digital technologies are transforming our cities and regions in many ways, creating both opportunities (e.g. working from home) and threats (e.g. global digital divides). Digital innovations reshape the way we live and physically and socially interact. The evidence so far points to spatially uneven implications of the digital transition, with some people and places being able to reap the benefits of this transition and others lagging behind. Likewise, digital innovations open new opportunities (e.g., improved access to urban services or regional career opportunities) for some population segments, while also potentially excluding other groups. Examples of research topics include the local participation in digital platforms, the impact of artificial intelligence on local jobs and companies, the potential benefits and risks of digital technologies on people’s mobility, health and social inclusion in urban vs non-urban areas, the impact of working from home on the organisation and design of cities and their services, the spatial impact on socio-economic inequalities within and between regions and people, and the place-specific interplay between the digital and green transition. As an Assistant Professor in Geography of the Digital Transition you will develop original and policy-relevant research to shape a geographical perspective on the digital transition. In addition, you will also be involved in teaching in our educational programmes. You will be working in inter-disciplinary teams. |
