Offer Description

Human activities have greatly impacted ecosystems of many species. While this has resulted in many species being threatened to become extinct, others have become important in local or worldwide food systems, or have become invasive species threatening native species within ecosystems.

As a scientist you will contribute to explore how this has affected the genomic architecture of such species with particular emphasis on aquatic species. Detailed insight in the genomic architecture is a prerequisite for the ecological and genetic management of these species.

At Wageningen University and Research we have a challenging position for you if you have a clear interest in one or more of the following research fields:

  • functional genomics,
  • population genomics,
  • evolutionary biology,
  • aquaculture,
  • animal breeding,
  • bioinformatics.

Within the chair group Animal Breeding and Genomics, as scientist, you will contribute to population genomics of managed populations, with emphasis on aquatic species.

This position is part of Wageningen University's commitment to the new “Sector Plan for Biology” which aims to further develop the knowledge and educational capacity for this discipline in The Netherlands. Depending on your starting level, you will be appointed as staff scientist or assistant professor, with, pending a one-year evaluation period, opportunities to enter tenure track.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

  • participate in research to enable the genetic management and genomic monitoring of species in the wild and in aquaculture.
  • initiate innovative research initiatives in this domain
  • participate in teaching related to functional and population genomics.

Requirements
Specific Requirements
  • a PhD degree in a relevant biological field (Genomics, bioinformatics, developmental biology or evolutionary biology).

Further preferred skills and experience:

  • Experience in analyses of whole genome sequence data for functional genomic analysis
  • Experience in population genetics and evolutionary genomics
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

You also have:

  • A strong interest in comparative biological analysis and computational biology.
  • A strong interest in population genetic concepts and population conservation management
  • A strong interest in fundamental and applied research.
  • A clear interest in aquatic animal species
  • A creative and innovative mindset.
  • Good organizational and (written and spoken) communication skills in English, as well as a proven ability to collaborate with others.

You can see that there are plenty of challenges ahead of you. These challenges can also be seen as development opportunities. So, if you do not yet have the track-record required in the vacancy, but do have solid work experience, we would also like to invite you to apply.
