Assistant Professor in European Legal and Economic Governance

The Faculty of Humanities, Department of History, European Studies and Religious Studies, is looking for an Assistant Professor in European Legal and Economic Governance.

What are you going to do

You will provide education in a dynamic context with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods. Your research will be part of the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES; artes.uva.nl ), one of the five research schools of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research .

Tasks and responsibilities;

• design and conduct independent research on the legal and political aspects of economic governance in the European Union resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals and/or books;
• actively pursue external funding for research, notably funding from research councils, national as well as European;
• actively contribute to and developing national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation;
• actively contribute to the research activities of the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES) and the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES);  
• develop, coordinate and teach courses in both Dutch and English, in the BA and MA programmes;
• supervise BA and MA theses and tutoring students; co-supervising PhD theses;
• actively contribute to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes in the department;
• take part in committees and working groups and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

What do we require of you

Research focus: You are a dynamic and ambitious researcher with a strong profile, demonstrable by international publications and an extensive academic network. You are a specialist in EU law and your publications show broad knowledge of the legal and/or political aspects of economic governance of the European Union (with a possible focus on: the internal market, competition policy, Economic and Monetary Union, social and labour market policy, or EU trade and development policy). Your research matches the profile of the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies, and in particular the School’s Priority Area ‘Europe’.

Teaching focus: You are able to develop and provide modules on EU law and political and economic governance, including introductory courses on EU substantive law (covering topics such as citizenship, internal market, competition, and the monetary union), and elective modules on topics related to your own research interests. Crucial is proven flexibility in teaching on broader topics in European politics and/or economics as part of an interdisciplinary team, and the ability to offer inspiring lectures and tutorials in the BA, MA and minor programmes that aspire to a wide range of students.

Your experience and profile

• you hold a PhD in law, economics or political science/international relations or other relevant social science discipline; candidates are also expected to have an advanced degree in law (an LLM or equivalent);
• you hold an international academic network in the research area concerned;
• you provide research output commensurate with the level of the position;
• you are an active and ambitious researcher with a strong publication record;
• you demonstrable the ability and ambition to obtain external research grants;
• you have wide and relevant teaching experience at BA and MA levels, including courses in EU law;
• you have an excellent command (near-native fluency) of English. Non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years (passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II, is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract);
• you have experience with digital and audiovisual teaching facilities and affinity with ICT in university teaching;
• you are experienced in valorization and practice-based education and/or research;
• you are a good team worker and are versatile at all levels, capable of multidisciplinary co-operation;
• you have excellent organisational experience and skills;
• you will acquired the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification or is willing to acquire this within the first two years.

Research that entails collaboration with non-academic institutions and agencies in the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond is highly welcome.

Our offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of two years with the intention of converting it into a permanent contract after a positive assessment. The ideal starting date of the employment contract is 1 February 2022.

The gross monthly salary, dependent on relevant experience, will range from €3,807 to €5,922, based on 38 hours a week. This is excluding a generous holiday scheme (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%). A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% rule’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement for the Dutch Universities is applicable.
