Job description

FASoS is looking for an Assistant Professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research related to (Dutch) Language Cultures and Cultural Diversity. This vacancy is part of the SSH Sector Plan on “Languages and Cultures”.

You will contribute to the teaching in a variety of BA and MA programs at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, such as the BA program in Arts and Culture and its corresponding MA program (specialization Contemporary Literature and Art: Cultural Interventions and Social Justice). Teaching tasks include tutoring, coordinating, and lecturing courses as well as supervising internships and BA and MA theses.

We expect you to take the lead in coaching Dutch language students and integrating Dutch (language) culture in existing educational programs as well as to participate in critical reflection on the so-called “Englishization” of higher education and its relation to language politics and quality of and equity in education.

You will become part of the Department of Literature and Art (https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/about-um/faculties/arts-and-social-sciences/departments/department-literature-art – currently under revision) as well as the Research Program Arts, Media, and Culture (https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/fasos-research-institute/research-programmes/arts-media-and-culture ). You will also be affiliated with the Center for Gender and Diversity (https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/research/centre-gender-and-diversity ) or the Maastricht Center for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) (https://macimide.maastrichtuniversity.nl/ ). You are expected to develop research projects and to attract external funding that is related to the faculty’s core research themes.

At the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, teaching and research duties follow the regular division of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.

Requirements

Your field of expertise is (Dutch) Language Cultures and Cultural Identity, and your background is in sociolinguistics, anthropology, cultural studies, or gender and diversity studies. You apply an ethnographic approach to study in- and exclusion through everyday language practices, for instance in supermarkets, primary schools, and long-term care facilities. Your scholarly interests include linguistic identity construction and language practices as vectors of social change as well as the affordances of multi- and bilingualism in (Dutch) regional and national contexts.

You are excited to work in an international team to collaborate and attract research grants. Your record of international peer-reviewed academic publications or publications of similar stature is excellent. You have engaged with outreach activities that contributed to relevant public debates. You have a relevant academic and societal network.

You are an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and have demonstrated ability in teaching coordination roles, in course development, and in thesis supervision. You are able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation. You have affinity with team-teaching and the teaching philosophy behind our system of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Experience with teaching in international classrooms is preferable.

This vacancy requires a candidate who is a native speaker or has full professional proficiency in Dutch. Fluency in English is also a prerequisite (Cambridge English Proficiency, level C2, orally and written).

Conditions of employment

We offer you a fulltime position as Assistant Professor (level 2) in tenure track. Following the new Dutch Collective Labor Agreement (CLA), you will automatically be tenured after 18 months on the condition of a positive evaluation. Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 3,974,-  and a maximum of € 5,439,- gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 11 according to Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment). Each year, the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

The university’s relocation policy stipulates that you need to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If not already living in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. Other secondary conditions include, for instance, a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave as well as a shared office space.
