The Department of Art and Culture, History, and Antiquity at the Faculty of Humanities, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, welcomes applications from specialists in the field of Digital Humanities and Society. We are looking for a new colleague who can support and help expand our teaching programme in Digital Humanities, while strengthening the interrelations between the arts, media and history research groups.
The successful candidate will have a proven capacity in researching culture and media through the lens of digital methods, preferably with a focus on (audio)visual and textual data and digital cultural heritage. They are experienced in using and teaching digital methods but also critically reflect on the broader impact of digitization and Artificial Intelligence on society, and on teaching and research in the humanities.
Your duties
The successful candidate will participate in our Digital Humanities minor (e.g. the Introduction to Digital Humanities course) and teach digital knowledge in BA Programmes such as Media, Art, Design & Architecture or (Global) History.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following fields:
- Digital cultural heritage, archival research and / or media studies.
- Interrelation between textual & visual data
- Digital (humanities) methods & approaches
- Digital hermeneutics and critical data analysis
- Social context of digital media
Requirements
- PhD in the Humanities (e.g. in Cultural History, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Cultural Heritage, or other relevant discipline)
- outstanding research potential (evidenced by a publication record appropriate to career stage)
- demonstrated knowledge of the Digital Humanities, Digital Archives & Curation of Data
- proven familiarity with computational methods in the Humanities
- proven capacity for and interest in critical reflection on Datafication in Humanities (or society at large)
- an interdisciplinary research attitude and interest in building bridges between Media Studies and Cultural History and between the Humanities and Computer Sciences
- teaching experience (a teaching qualification such as the BKO is desirable)
- excellent written and spoken English and (preferably) Dutch. Candidates without Dutch proficiency are expected to learn Dutch within two years.
- ability to work in a team
What are we offering?
We offer a Tenure-Track position at the level of Assistant Professor initially for the duration of 5 years. Tenure can be achieved if the faculty criteria for Assistant Professor are fulfilled. For the duration of the tenure track, performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching, publication record, attempts to acquire research funding either individually or in consortia, academic service and valorisation.
On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3.974 (scale 11) and a maximum of €5.439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system: Assistant Professor 2 and is vacant for 1.0 FTE.
