Offer Description

In the context of the sector plan for the Humanities titled ‘Tradition in transition’, the Faculty of Humanities currently has a vacant Assistant Professor position as part of the sector research initiative on Cultural Heritage and Identity. Within this research theme the focus is on material and immaterial heritage, and on cultural heritage and societal changes.

The Assistant Professor in Black, Indigenous and Critical Race Studies in Arts and Culture will work in the Department of Arts and Culture, which runs the procedure as well. Their research will be part of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), one of the five research schools of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research .

The Department of Arts and Culture is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We welcome employees who contribute to the diversity of our faculty through their unique backgrounds and perspectives.

What are you going to do?
You will provide education in a dynamic context with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods. You will develop and provide modules within the broad fields of Black, Indigenous and Critical Race Studies across varied programmes offered within Cultural Studies, one of the capacity groups of the Department of Arts and Culture. You will contribute to teaching at BA and MA levels, and in time supervise doctoral candidates.

Cultural Studies has recently (September 2023) launched a new BA programme in Global Arts, Culture and Politics (GAPC). You will design, develop and coordinate courses across all three years of this programme, which includes four majors – Culture and Social Justice, Reimagining Sustainability, Art and Media, and the Human and AI. Your teaching will centre on critical race theories, indigenous theories, black studies and various other subjects within these majors, connecting undergraduate education in arts and culture with national, transnational, and global debates. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of teachers to offer inspiring lectures and seminars to a diverse cohort of students. At the Masters level, you may also be asked to contribute courses to one or more of our programmes (Heritage & Memory Studies; Museum Studies; Art, Culture and Politics). You will also supervise BA and MA theses and work placements across these programmes.

Within ASCA you will collaborate with emerging and established scholars to develop a variety of research activities across themes of aesthetics&politics, post- and decoloniality, artistic research, and pluriversal ontologies. Research at ASCA is organised around five constellations: Art and Aesthetics, Cultural and Social Critique, Globalization and Migration, Identities, and Mediality. Your research will contribute to one or more of these, and to the recently launched Research Priority Area Decolonial Futures . You will also contribute to conversations and collaborations within the sector research theme Cultural Heritage and Identity.
