Assistant Professor in Art History and Heritage Studies (1.0 FTE)
Job description
The Section Art History within the Department of History and Art History seeks to appoint a full-time Assistant Professor (universitair docent) in Art History and Heritage Studies, with expertise in the field of art and tangible heritage, and the proven ability to apply knowledge and methods from material culture, museum or (critical) heritage studies in teaching and research in the field of art and architectural history. The area of specialization and the period are open, but there is a preference for a candidate who in teaching and research can strengthen one of the axes of the Art History Section, either the transcultural, the technical or the digital focus area.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- a PhD degree in Art History, or any other related, relevant field;
- a thorough knowledge of the field of art history, and heritage studies, or material culture studies, or museum studies as demonstrated by scholarly output and/or the organization of exhibitions;
- experience with academic teaching, the willingness to teach on all educational levels, including BA, MA and RMA, and the willingness and curiosity to teach more general courses within the field of art history at BA and MA level;
- a clear teaching philosophy, to be included in your letter of motivation, briefly outlining your teaching beliefs and practices in a teaching philosophy statement, and the skills and knowledge you bring to an education team;
- a strong network with national and international museums and heritage institutions, the proven ability to develop research and teaching together with museums, and knowledge of relevant heritage and museum policies and politics at national and international level;
- ability to take up administrative tasks regarding teaching, and the ability and the willingness to play a role in the management of the section Art History and/or the Department;
- readiness to engage with a wider audience and to assist in developing the impact of research beyond the university and/or a record of contributing to team science;
- a supportive attitude towards colleagues, with an open mind towards creative forms of exchange and cooperation, contributing to the academic life of the department and strengthening the ties of the Art History Section with the Heritage and Public History Lab;
- an innovative research theme and strategy, outlined in a research statement included in your letter of motivation.
Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one. Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English. Non-Dutch speaking candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.

Offer
We offer a position (1.0 FTE), as from 1 August 2022 for a period of one year and after a positive evaluation, the appointment will become permanent. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €3,821 and €5,230 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
