The International Institute of Air and Space Law (IIASL) at Faculty of Law seeks to recruit an

Assistant Professor in Air Law 

Key responsibilities 

The Assistant Professor (universitair docent) in Air Law is expected to teach and conduct research in this fast-paced, dynamic field that is influenced by public international law, EU law,  competition law and environmental law, as well as international trade law and the law on aircraft financing.

The Assistant Professor should ideally contribute to a focused research agenda, for instance, on challenges to the aviation sector and the role of States, the EU and the international legal order in air transport. Research is conducted under the Leiden Law School research programmes ‘Exploring the Frontiers of International Law’ and ‘The Progression of EU Law: Accommodating Change and Upholding Values’.

In terms of teaching, the Assistant Professor will be expected to contribute to a bachelor’s course and to teach on the Advanced LLM in Air and Space Law programme; both are conducted in English. The Assistant Professor will supervise LLM theses and possibly also doctoral work.

The IIASL benefits from an extensive network of alumni and professionals in the aviation and space sectors. To nurture its network, the IIASL regularly organises international activities and engages in collaborative and contract research. The Assistant Professor will help to maintain and grow the network and support its activities.

Selection criteria

The successful candidate must have:

• Completed a PhD in the field of air law, public international law or EU law;
• Contributed to the field of air law through peer-reviewed publications;
• Sound teaching experience including assessment design and hybrid education or e-learning;
• Ideally a minimum of three years of prior experience;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.

 The candidate must also be:

• Willing to travel and to participate in national and international events and conferences;
• Proficient in general computer skills and experience with electronic collaboration tools; and
• Willing to learn Dutch.

 The working language of the IIASL is English.

Lectures in Air Law began at Leiden University in 1938. Since 1985 the IIASL conducts teaching, research and other academic activities such as the organisation of conferences, moot courts and participation in foreign academic activities related to air and space law. The activities carried out by the IIASL enjoy an outstanding reputation worldwide.

Terms and conditions

We offer a fixed-term one-year contract with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 3,746.- to € 5,127.- gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
