Assistant Professor German Sociolinguistics (1,00 FTE)

Leiden University Centre for Linguistics is looking for an assistant professor to conduct research and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in German linguistics and sociolinguistics in Leiden and The Hague.
Key responsibilities
• Teaching and developing relevant courses for the BA programs German Language and Culture, International Studies, the Leiden University College;
• Supervising BA and MA theses;
• Conducting research in the field of sociolinguistics including regular dissemination of results through appropriate channels;
• Securing external funding for research;
• Contributing to organizational activities of the programs and the Institute.
We are looking for a promising scholar to join our team by bringing in expertise in the study of language in society. An interest in and ability to teach interdisciplinary courses on topics such as multilingualism and migration, language and diversity, language and identity and text linguistics is desirable.
Selection criteria
• PhD in German linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Studies or other relevant field;
• In-depth knowledge of the most recent developments in sociolinguistics;
• In-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods and techniques;
• Experience with research-driven teaching;
• Proven didactic qualities (teaching evaluations);
• A promising research agenda informed by national and international funding priorities;
• An excellent command of German and English, ideally native proficiency of German. If the applicant is not Dutch-speaking, s/he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years of taking up duty.

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 995, the faculty provides 27 master’s and 25 bachelor’s programmes for over 7,000 students based at locations in Leiden and in The Hague. For more information see the website.
The Faculty has seven Institutes, among which the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) . LUCL has a longstanding tradition in the study of the world’s languages and features unique linguistic expertise. Current theoretical insights are combined with modern experimental methods in its research profile area ‘Language Diversity in the World’.
Terms and conditions
We offer a 1.0 FTE temporary appointment of one year. After one year this position may lead to a permanent appointment depending on good performance evaluations.
Salary ranges from € 3,821.- to € 5,230.- gross per month (pay scale 11) based on fulltime employment in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Depending on qualifications, you may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until you fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to the number of years of relevant work experience. The intended starting date is 1 January 2023.

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/ she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
