Job description

The department Human-Centered Design (HCD) within the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) is recruiting an assistant professor with a focus on education and specific expertise in Formgiving.

We define Formgiving as the way in which a designer gives shape to his/her idea and concept. This can be a product, a service or a system; it can be physical or virtual; it can be tangible or intangible; it can be static or dynamic. Through that form, the designer communicates with the user/consumer. In this way formgiving gives expression to the product; it carries the identity of an organisation and the qualities of the brand; it is the access to the function of a product and the technology that makes that function possible; it brings the elements of a product together into an aesthetically pleasing, understandable, meaningful, or seductive whole and is therefore the key to experience, behaviour, and behavioural change.

Formgiving is a skill that one learns by doing; by experimenting with material, shape, colour, timing, dynamics, and interaction. Formgiving is also a field of knowledge: In recent decades, a great deal of knowledge has been developed about expression and meaning, about metaphors and affordances, about the character of new materials and the aesthetics of interaction with interactive technology and dynamic systems.

The assistant professor Formgiving brings a new impulse to this changing and evolving domain. An impulse that is scientifically informed and embedded in research, but has a main focus on educating our design students.

In this role you will show leadership in three domains: (1) integrating state-of-the-art knowledge on Formgiving in the IDE curriculum, (2) contributing to the development of this state-of-the-art knowledge, and (3) acting as ambassador for the Formgiving competence, involving colleagues in innovative learning and teaching practices.

  • 60% Of your time is dedicated to teaching. This includes coordinating one or more core courses in BSc or MSc education (to be determined). Furthermore, you are broadly deployable for other education, such as supervising graduates and students in project-based education.
  • 30% Of your time is earmarked for research and valorisation. You fulfil this task by keeping track of knowledge development in the field of Formgiving and by conducting research for knowledge development relevant to that competency. For this purpose, strategic collaborations can be entered into with IDE researchers.
  • Finally, 10% of your time is for general organisation (such as meetings and administration).
  • For all of the above, the focus of your activities will be determined in consultation with your supervisor.

You have mastered the design process and have been scientifically trained. You have a demonstrable affinity with education and can make the link between education and research.

  • You have a Bachelor and/or Master in design, arts or a related field.
  • You have a PhD in design, arts or a related field.
  • You are a born teacher: you have a passion for education and at least three years of teaching experience.
  • You are skilled in the use of active learning strategies and strive for excellence in teaching.
  • You have social intelligence; you can support and inspire students and colleagues.
  • You are a team player; you work constructively with fellow teachers and researchers, students, and the educational organisation (education board and educational & student affairs).
  • You are proactive in the organisation and innovation of education; you are prepared to take the initiative in educational development.
  • You are a go-getter; someone who is able to bring educational development to a successful execution (and enthuse colleagues to do so).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 jaar.

A temporary tenure-track position is offered. Afterwards and based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment you will be offered a permanent position. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

Faculty Industrial Design Engineering

Matching the evolution of people with the speed of the revolution of technology. This is the focus of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE). Delft designers act as a bridge between advances in technology and the needs of people, organisations and society to create products, services and systems with purpose.

The department Human-Centered Design (HCD) develops knowledge about the interaction between people and design—knowledge with which the human dimension can be placed at the centre of design processes. This includes both instrumental and experiential aspects of human-design interactions. The term 'design' is used here in a broad sense, as product, service, environment, etc., and as part of complex adaptive socio-technological systems with multiple stakeholders, and an increasing role of complex data and artificial intelligence. Important aspects are the expressiveness of the design, usability and aesthetics, the meaning the design has for the user in the socio-cultural context, and the impact it has on the user, stakeholders, and the community. HCD applies the motto "design for the human dimension" both in its research and in its contribution to IDE education.

IDE education enables students to develop the broad set of competences that are required to be a professional designer. The department Human-Centered Design (HCD) contributes several of such competences to the curriculum, such as integration, prototyping, imagination/vision creation, framing, identity & positioning, formgiving, user testing, design research, critical thinking, context mapping, and systems thinking. The current position focuses specifically on the core competence Formgiving, contributing to both design education and knowledge development.
