Assistant professor for Philosophy, Politics and Economics (1,0 FTE)

Job description Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) has a vacancy for an assistant professor for Philosophy, Politics and Economics. The assistant professor will devote 70% of the appointment to teaching, and 30% to research.
You will coordinate and teach courses at bachelor and master level covered by U.S.E.’s Applied Economics section. In particular, the courses are in the bachelor programme of PPE (Philosophy, Politics, Economics plus History). We are open to candidates who can teach courses in the domain of economics of the public sector, political economy and microeconomics. You will take care of qualitatively good teaching in accordance with the academic and departmental guidelines. Teaching is in English. Furthermore, the assistant professor supervises bachelor and master theses and other research projects by students.
The assistant professor spends 30% of their work hours on research that is coordinated by the U.S.E. Research Institute. The institute stimulates collaboration with researchers from other disciplines by focusing on research activities that address societally relevant issues. Well-being, cooperation, innovation and curiosity are our core values. Even though the research focus is on economics of the public sector, political economy and microeconomics, connections to other research themes at U.S.E. (future of work, entrepreneurship, sustainability and economic development, sustainable finance) and to the Utrecht University Strategic Themes Institutions for Open Societies and/or Pathways to Sustainability are highly appreciated.

Qualifications The successful candidate is expected to have knowledge and skills in teaching Economics, and can contribute to the research programme of the U.S.E. Research Institute. More particularly the candidate has got:
  • a PhD degree in economics and related disciplines;
  • a strong track record in research as demonstrated among others by publications and citations in international recognised journals;
  • relevant knowledge of teaching in economics of the public sector, political economy and microeconomics;
  • some interest in another PPE discipline (Philosophy, Politics or History) through research or teaching;
  • teaching experience in an international academic environment with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to graduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;
  • strong communication and coordination skills;
  • strong command of spoken and written English.

Offer We offer a position (1.0 FTE) for a period of eighteen months with a final evaluation, after which the candidate may be appointed as an Assistant Professor with tenure. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is one of the possibilities. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €3,807 and €5,922 (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. Furthermore, the section contributes to the bachelor programme in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
