Assistant Professor American Studies (0.8 FTE)

The Programme of American Studies is searching for an Assistant Professor to strengthen our team. We are looking for an enthusiastic and cooperative colleague with a focus on a hemispheric approach to American Studies, a promising research agenda that complements our current interests, and a teaching portfolio that demonstrates the ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level. Your work tasks include the preparation, monitoring and teaching of (new and continuing) course units in a range of interdisciplinary areas, with a special focus on Latin American culture and history. You are expected to produce research and supervise undergraduate and graduate students as well as to develop new ideas in research and education, and secure funding (independently or jointly) for future research. You are expected to collaborate with colleagues within the American Studies programme, as well as with other programmes in the Faculty.

American Studies in Groningen
The American Studies programme at the University of Groningen is the only one in The Netherlands to offer a self-contained, interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree programme (three years) as well as a master’s degree programme (one year). Fully taught in English by an international staff it leads the national accreditation rankings for academic excellence across the humanities. The majority of our approximately 240 students spend a semester at one of the fifteen US universities with which our programmes have long-established student exchange relationships.

Research in American Studies is embedded in the Centre for the Study of Democratic Cultures and Politics (DemCP) and conducted under the auspices of the Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG).

? a PhD in (Latin)American Studies or related fields such as Caribbean Studies
? experience in setting up new course units at the university level, using inspiring teaching methods and linking your research activities to your course units at the bachelor and master levels in a range of interdisciplinary areas, including the aforementioned fields
? a demonstrated affinity with and teaching experience in interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies, from a transnational and inter-American perspective
? an excellent publication record for the stage of your career
? a demonstrable capacity and willingness to operate beyond narrow disciplinary boundaries within and beyond the field of American Studies, in teaching and in research
? a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research and teaching duties
? the capacity and willingness to undertake administrative duties
? international research experience and an international research network (appropriate to career stage)
? teaching experience and relevant teaching qualifications (such as BKO-Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, University Teaching Qualification), or the willingness to obtain this qualification in the first two years of your appointment
? the ability to communicate, teach and publish in English (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing and speaking)
? proficiency in Dutch or willing to learn it within a reasonable period of time (two years); CEFR B2 for reading and listening; CEFR B1 for writing and speaking.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• an 0.8 FTE appointment at the level of Assistant Professor with a gross monthly salary depending on qualifications and work experience from € 3,974 (salary scale 11) up to a maximum of € 6,181 (salary scale 12) for a full time position
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance. For international candidates an advantageous tax rule may be applicable
• a temporary contract for 12 or 18 months with a view on a permanent contract. The concrete content and duration of the temporary employment contract (12 or 18 months) depend on the candidate's previous employment history. The position entails a contract combining 60% teaching tasks with 40% research-time. Favorable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

The faculty will help you obtaining the requested qualifications for teaching and the Dutch language within two years. Having started to learn Dutch is a criterion for a permanent position.

The appointee will preferably commence 1 August 2023
