Assistant or Associate Professor Unconventional Electronics & Computing Systems (# of pos: 2)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 27 Jan 2023

Challenge: Edge Artificial Intelligence requires computing systems that deploy intelligence at the edge (e.g. for IoT) with extremely small energy consumption and footprints.

Change: Develop, design and demonstrate energy-efficient computing systems harnessing unconventional devices.

Impact: Enabling powerful AI in autonomous systems, wearable devices, and personalised healthcare.

Job Description

For Artificial Intelligence in edge applications like autonomous systems, wearable devices and personalised healthcare, we need computing systems with tremendous energy efficiency. New computing paradigms, such as computation-in-memory and neuromorphic computing, using emerging device technologies, such as memristors and spintronics, offer potential solutions. However, they need much further research and development in different aspects related to the whole computing engine design stack (e.g., circuits, micro-architectures, system architectures, compilers, algorithms) as well as related to their dependability aspects such as design-for-testability, reliability, and security. At TU Delft, you’ll be working at the forefront of research on these unconventional electronics and computing systems.

The Department of Quantum & Computer Engineering (QCE) has various openings for assistant and associate professors. You may choose your field of research from our wide range of roadmap topics, based on your vision and interests. Topics range from system architectures and microarchitectures to compilers, mapping methods and circuit design. You may also focus on reliability and security. By building your network of industrial and public partners, you’ll attract the funding needed for your research. In addition, you’ll be teaching Bachelor and Master students and supervising Master and PhD students. And you’ll play an active role in our faculty’s committees and the scientific community at large.

You will join the 100-strong cohesive team of highly-motivated professors and students of QCE. Ours is a supportive, internationally diverse and inclusive environment where you’ll find an open, welcoming atmosphere. Being used to growing academic talents, we’ll give you all the training and coaching you need to evolve and grow your career. In our multidisciplinary domain, you’ll be working closely with your colleagues. Our common drive? To invent, design, prototype and demonstrate the potential of disruptive computing accelerators using the unique features of emerging devices.

Requirements

Conducting groundbreaking research and taking the lead in unconventional computing in the academic world: that’s what drives you. As a teacher, you will coach, inspire, and interact with students. Your communication and networking skills help you connect with colleagues, students and partners, strengthening our Faculty and department.

You Also Have
A PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related subject.
A research background and a keen interest in computing systems using emerging technologies, such as but not limited to, in-memory, neuromorphic, spin-wave, quantum and edge computing, (micro)architectures, compilers and mapping algorithms, and digital circuit design.
An excellent command of English.
If you feel this role would be a perfect match, but you cannot tick all the boxes yet, we’d still really like to get to know you, as you can learn and grow on the job!

Conditions of employment

The vacancies are at the level of assistant professor (Tenure track) or associate professor, depending on background, experience and leadership(potential).

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
