We are looking for an ambitious assistant or associate professor who is eager to join and extend the department of Health Promotion at Maastricht University. This department focuses on the promotion of public health and healthy behaviour. The candidate is able to develop initiatives and acquire funding to conduct innovative and high quality research on this topic. The candidate is an enthusiastic and experienced teacher and supervisor at all academic levels (bachelor, master, PhD.) and is eager to contribute to academic teaching in the field of health promotion.
Job description

Tasks:

  • Contributing to research focused on improving theory and practice of health behavior change within the research lines Promoting Health & Personalised Care at the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI) and Obesity, Diabetes & Cardiovascular Health at the NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism;
  • Acquisition of research funds to continue development of an own research area that could connect the research conducted at both research lines and fits within and is complementary to research conducted at the department of Health Promotion;
  • Supervision of PhD-students and post-docs within own research area and in cooperation with others;
  • Teaching and coordination of courses for bachelor and master students about health behavior, prevention and health promotion.

Requirements

A PhD. in social sciences or health sciences with excellent knowledge of and experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research, and an outstanding track record of publications in peer reviewed scientific journals, teaching at the university level, acquisition of research funds, and supervision of PhD. students. A University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or willingness to obtain this within the first year.


Conditions of employment

The position (1.0 FTE) is temporary for the duration of 1 year. With suitable performance permanent employment is one of the possibilities.

Depending on experience and qualification, the maximum gross monthly salary is € 5.439 (as Assistant Professor/UD2) and € 6.702 (as Associate Professor/UHD2) of the Dutch university collective bargaining agreement. An 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance is also provided.
In addition to good primary employment conditions, UM also offers an attractive package of secondary employment conditions.

Health Promotion

The department of Health Promotion focuses on the promotion of public health and healthy behaviour. Health promotion refers to the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions. A so-called ecological perspective is adopted, in which determinants of health and of health behaviour at different levels are considered.

NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism initiates and catalyzes translational research into nutritional health benefits and risks focusing on metabolic and chronic inflammatory diseases. Through its research master and PhD program NUTRIM aims to educate scientists of high academic excellence and ambassadors to support and develop the field of nutrition, metabolism and toxicology within and outside the Netherlands. Sixteen biomedical, clinical, and behavioural-science departments are incorporated within NUTRIM.
