Assistant/Associate Professor Urbanising River Deltas

We are looking for an experimental hydrologist who will focus on river deltas that are characterized by rapid socio-economic development.

The global water and sediment cycles are subject to major changes through direct interventions (e.g. dams, river alignment, land reclamations) and indirect effects (e.g. climate change, different land use). This causes risks for nature and society. Strengthening our fundamental understanding of the water and sediment cycles at all temporal and spatial scales, as well as the role water plays in food production, the livability of low-lying deltas and the transport of materials, pollution and nutrients is therefore of great importance.

Our goal is to strengthen our academic team around these themes.

We are looking for an Assistant/Associate  Professor in urbanising river deltas that will build the empirical basis to address typical issues such as flooding, urban heat islands, salt intrusion, and subsidence.

Within this topic, the successful candidate is given the opportunity to develop their own research line, complementing ongoing global-change-related research at Delft University of Technology.

The key job responsibilities of a successful candidate for this role include:

  • Research: Delivering high quality, internationally leading research leading to improved and innovative observation methods, ideally combining different sources of information (in situ, remote sensing, models). Research should to improve management of water resources. (Co-)supervising PhD and MSc students aimed at successful completion of their theses. Effectively disseminating research outcomes via internationally leading journals and conferences is an intrinsic part of the job.
  • Education: Contributing to the organization and teaching of relevant courses in the BSc and MSc programs of Civil Engineering and Applied Earth Sciences. This includes the opportunity to introduce new content and teaching methods matching the candidate’s expertise and interests in the renewed MSc programs (offered from September 2022). Preparing, supervising and assessing of BSc and MSc student projects.
  • Valorization: Initiating projects and obtaining funding for new research and/or education projects. We encourage proactive engagement with both private and government sectors, i.e. industry, business and community partners for societal impact.
  • Organization: Contributing to organizational and administrative activities and committees within the Department of Water Management and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

The position is open for candidates for the assistant and associate professor level. At the level of associate professor, the candidate is expected to have proven capabilities and track record with the initiation and coordination of the research described above and fulfils the criteria of for this role with in TU Delft.    

The successful candidate:

  • Holds a doctorate degree (PhD) in engineering or science in a relevant field, such as Water Management, Civil or Rural Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental and/or earth Science, and Applied Physics
  • Has a track record that demonstrates the ability to independently perform and publish high quality research
  • Demonstrates a strong outline for setting up their own research area and building their own research group, while at the same time establishing strong collaborations with colleagues within the department, faculty and university
  • Possesses a good understanding of the higher education and academic environment, including diversity and inclusion values
  • Has the capacity to communicate and cooperate effectively with peers, students and stakeholders

Our intention is to offer you a permanent position after a probation period  in which you will be evaluated based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
