Job description
Would you like to explore the frontier of mathematical physics where gravity meets geometry and analysis? Then you have a part to play as an assistant/associate professor in mathematical relativity. We offer you the opportunity to explore an exciting area of research at the interface between mathematics and physics, working in a unique interdisciplinary research institute for mathematics and (astro)physics where gravity is a central theme. You will make your mark not only in scientific research, but also in the teaching of mathematics and mathematical physics in general.
We are looking for a mathematician working in the area of mathematical general relativity. This position will expand our young initiative in mathematical relativity, which is part of the Mathematical Physics research group. This group has traditionally specialised in quantum (field) theory, non-commutative geometry and operator algebras, and foundations of quantum physics and general relativity, which is led by Klaas Landsman and Walter van Suijlekom as full professors and also includes Annegret Burtscher, Peter Hochs, and Michael Müger. Within the Mathematics Department, this group is also closely connected to research in both applied mathematics, especially on partial differential equations (PDEs), and pure mathematics with a focus on analysis and geometry. You will also strengthen the increasing concentration of our umbrella institute (IMAPP) on gravity as a key research theme, particularly on black holes (including the Event Horizon Telescope), gravitational waves (with links to both current and future detection technology such as the Einstein Telescope), and quantum gravity. Women and members of other groups underrepresented in science are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements
- You have a PhD in Mathematics and a proven record as an independent researcher in the area mentioned above, in which you pursue your own well-defined research programme.
- You have clear international visibility through a demonstrated track record in publishing, citations, and conference appearances.
- Your research fits naturally into the research programme of our Mathematical Physics group and, more broadly, into that of our department, with potential for collaborations.
- You have evident passion for teaching, excellent teaching skills, and some academic teaching experience (including student supervision).
- You should be able to teach a broad range of courses in mathematics. If you are not sufficiently fluent in Dutch yet, you will initially be allowed to teach in English; however, you should be willing and able to acquire the skills necessary to lecture in Dutch within three years (Dutch language level B2).
Conditions of employment
Fixed-term contract: You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months. Upon a positive performance evaluation at the end of this period, the contract may be converted into a permanent one.
- It concerns an employment for 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
- Depending on your scientific track record and experience you will be appointed as an Assistant Professor (level 1-2) or Associate Professor (level 1-2), potentially with career track criteria for future promotion.
- For an Assistant Professor the salary ranges from salary scale 11 (level 2), maximum gross monthly salary of €5,439 to salary scale 12 (level 1), maximum gross monthly salary of €6,181.
- For an Associate Professor the salary ranges from salary scale 13 (level 2), maximum gross monthly salary of €6,702 to salary scale 14 (level 1), maximum gross monthly salary of €7,362.
- You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
- You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months. Upon a positive performance evaluation at the end of this period, the contract may be converted into a permanent one.
- You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services . Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
- Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 29 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
Employer
The Mathematics Department at Radboud University is part of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics (IMAPP) in the Faculty of Science. The department represents a broad range of areas, including pure and applied analysis, algebraic geometry and topology, number theory, functional analysis, mathematical physics, non-commutative geometry, special functions, and stochastics. Locally, the department has strong ties with theoretical physics, astrophysics, theoretical computer science, and history and philosophy of physics. Nationally the department is active in all four NWO mathematical research clusters (DIAMANT, GQT, NDNS+, and STAR). The Mathematical Physics group is also represented in Route 2 of the National Science Agenda (NWA), which has a strong focus on gravity and includes mathematical aspects. IMAPP aims at increasing its diversity - including its gender balance - in various ways.
