Assistant/associate professor in contemporary carbon cycle processes

The Faculty of Science of the Vrije Universiteit is creating 16 assistant/associate professor positions to strengthen its research and teaching in the fields of natural hazards and risks, climate change, water cycle, evolutionary adaptation, biodiversity, health and environment, carbon cycle and ecosystem services. These positions will support the expansion of the faculty’s capacity to intensify its research and teaching on sustainability. Job description

An earth or environmental scientist who researches vulnerable carbon pools such as tropical forests, peatlands and/or permafrost to understand carbon-climate processes and mitigation potential. The candidate can have experimental, remote sensing or modeling skills, or a combination thereof. The candidate will contribute to and expand the department’s teaching curriculum on carbon cycle processes and their interaction with climate.

Your duties

  • conduct research on carbon cycle processes in vulnerable ecosystems, including forests, peatlands and permafrost landscapes, in relation to climate change and the mitigation potential of these ecosystems (ecosystem services)
  • teaching in courses related to carbon cycle-climate interactions on BSc. and MSc. level. This may include new and existing courses in the curricula
  • supervision of Masters and Bachelors theses 
  • acquisition of external funds 
  • (co-) publish scientific papers

Requirements
  • PhD in Earth or environmental sciences with a demonstrable expertise in carbon cycle research 
  • Experience in academic teaching (or willingness to acquire it) 
  • Strong willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Our BSc programs are taught in Dutch. Therefore, Dutch proficiency, or willingness to learn Dutch, is a requirement

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years – 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring.
