Assistant/Associate Professor in Atmospheric Dynamics and Composition

The Faculty of Science of the Vrije Universiteit is creating 16 assistant/associate professor positions to strengthen its research and teaching in the fields of natural hazards and risks, climate change, water cycle, evolutionary adaptation, biodiversity, health and environment, carbon cycle and ecosystem services. These positions will support the expansion of the faculty’s capacity to intensify its research and teaching on sustainability. We seek an earth- or atmospheric scientist who studies contemporary climate change from an atmospheric perspective and studies the changing occurrence of extremes like drought or heatwaves and their impact on terrestrial processes such as carbon assimilation or wildfires via Earth system models (ideally EC-Earth) or big data analyses. The ideal candidate would combine theoretical expertise with various atmospheric measurements datasets (for example from new satellite missions for monitoring atmospheric dynamics, atmospheric composition and land surface properties) and assess impacts and risks for society and/or ecosystems. The candidate is expected to connect on-going research lines between the department of Water and Climate Risk (part of the Institute for Environmental Studies, IVM) and the department of Earth Sciences.

Your duties

• conduct research on the impact of the changing atmospheric dynamics and composition on land surface processes and extremes
• teaching courses in atmospheric processes and dynamics and (big) data use on BSc and MSc level
• supervision of Masters and Bachelors theses 
• work together with the department's staff of both Earth Sciences and Water and Climate Risk in the acquisition of external funds 
• (co-) publish scientific papers

• PhD in Earth / Environmental Sciences with a demonstrable expertise in atmospheric research with a strong publication record
• experience in academic teaching (or willingness to acquire it) 
• strong willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment and connect research between different departments
• excellent communication skills
• our BSc programs are taught in Dutch. Therefore, Dutch proficiency, or willingness to learn Dutch, is a requirement

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE. The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years – 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 18 months.

About the department
The Department of Earth Sciences has approximately 35 permanent staff members organized in twelve research groups. Research in the department is focused on two general areas: Geology & Geochemistry and Earth & Climate. The Department teaches in the Earth Sciences as well as in the Earth Sciences, Economics & Sustainability BSc programs, and in the MSc programs Earth Sciences and Hydrology.
