Come join QuTech and create the Quantum Future!
Would you like to be part of an innovative and inspiring organization? We are searching for a Principal Investigator to join us at QuTech and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS)!
We are actively looking for a Principal Investigator in device modelling to strengthen our quantum computing division within our mission to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer. Toward this goal, significant effort is spent in the division in designing, fabricating and testing solid-state quantum processors and the cryogenic electrical interface required to control the qubits. Your research program is expected to contribute towards this mission by creating device models that enable understanding, simulating and designing complex quantum/classical systems, with specific focus on cryo-CMOS device physics, characterization, and modelling.
You will be part of both the QuTech Quantum Computing Division and the Quantum & Computer Engineering department of EEMCS.
QuTech and its Quantum Computing Division
QuTech is a mission-driven research institute founded by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, we work on a radically new technology with world-changing potential. Our ambition is to develop scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an intrinsically safe quantum internet.
We are creating the quantum future and we believe that quantum technology will be a game changer in many social and economic sectors – including health, agriculture, climate and safety. To achieve our ambitious goals, we bring together scientists, engineers and industry in an inspiring environment, with plenty of space for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation.
Our research and engineering activities are conducted in three divisions: Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Qubit Research. And for this role you will be working with the Quantum Computing Division.
Realizing the promise of a quantum computer requires the development of different layers of hardware and software, together referred to as the quantum computing stack. This is what we do in the Quantum Computing Division. The basis of the stack, referred to as the ‘quantum chip’, contains the qubits. We are investigating different types of approaches for this part of the stack: electron spins in quantum dots and superconducting quantum circuits. Also, we’re developing the system architecture that connects and translates quantum algorithms to the low-level pulses that operate on the qubits of quantum processors.

You will be employed by Delft university and split your time between QuTech and
EEMCS and its Quantum & Computer Engineering department
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other.
In the Quantum & Computer Engineering department of EEMCS, you will join our 100-strong cohesive team of highly-motivated professors and students. Our common drive? To invent, design, prototype and demonstrate the potential of disruptive technologies using the unique features of emerging devices, such as qubits, memristors, spintronics and graphene.
QCE research adapts a holistic approach in which it addresses the whole computing engine design stack (i.e., technology, circuit design, architectures, compilers, algorithms and applications) to maximize the computing efficiency, where the main focus is on the middle layers (circuit design, architectures and compilers). This research goes hand in hand with the research on dependability aspects such as testability and design-for-testability, reliability, and security.
The research in the QCE department is conducted and built based on strong public-private partnership and in close collaboration with world-leading companies (such as NXP, Philips, IBM, Intel, Fujitsu, KPN, Airbus, etc. ) and research centres and universities (such as IMEC, RWTH, EPFL, UPC, UC Berkley, TalTech, Polito di Torino, Pisa University).
Both EEMCS and QuTech offer a supportive, internationally diverse and inclusive environment, where you’ll find an open, welcoming atmosphere. Being used to growing talent, we’ll give you all the training and coaching you need to evolve in your position.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in the theory and modelling of electronic devices, and is eager to collaborate with circuit designers as end-users of the developed models. Past contributions to the research and development of widely-adopted models are a plus.
Furthermore, we are looking for a colleague who is passionate, committed and respectful. In QuTech group leaders, we value leadership and a sense for initiative in combination with a strong team spirit and willingness to contribute to the organization. We expect a positive, open-minded and professional attitude, and a strong work ethic. Finally, we are looking for candidates with excellent communication skills and intercultural sensitivity.
Junior candidates will be appointed on a tenure-track basis with the prospect of a tenured position. The contract is based on a fixed-term of 6 years and evaluation for permanent employment will occur after max 5 years. (Senior candidates will be appointed through a tailor made contract depending on their experience).
TU Delft/QuTech offers a customizable compensation package, an attractive pension scheme, holiday allowance, generous holidays, 13th month pay (paid as a pro-rata bonus in December), a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.
Delft University of Technology is built on strong foundations. As creators of the world-famous Dutch waterworks and pioneers in biotech, TU Delft is a top international university combining science, engineering and design. It delivers world class results in education, research and innovation to address challenges in the areas of energy, climate, mobility, health and digital society. For generations, our engineers have proven to be entrepreneurial problem-solvers, both in business and in a social context.
At TU Delft we embrace diversity as one of our core values and we actively engage to be a university where you feel at home and can flourish. We value different perspectives and qualities. We believe this makes our work more innovative, the TU Delft community more vibrant and the world more just. Together, we imagine, invent and create solutions using technology to have a positive impact on a global scale. That is why we invite you to apply. Your application will receive fair consideration.
