The Research Development (RD) Technical Grant specialist works as part of a team to provide administrative support for UCSC researchers applying for extramural grant funding. This work is part of a collaboration between the UCSC Office of Research and the Academic Divisions to provide consistent support to strategic research objectives of the University of California Santa Cruz, as well as support academic units to access reputation enhancing, high dollar opportunities. As an entry level position, Technical Grant Specialists will learn to maintain a strong customer-service oriented environment, establish one-on-one relationships with faculty members and assist them by: identifying suitable grant opportunities through online research; interpreting RFP requirements; drafting and modifying proposal documents for submission; coordinating proposal preparation efforts; and assisting faculty with navigating electronic resources, such as the Cayuse research administration tool, the Pivot grant search engine, SciENcv, and similar online resources. Other functions to be performed include collaborating with other members of the Office of Research to enhance grant proposal processes at UCSC. This may include: designing proposal development resources, including templates, that can be adapted for various components of federal and private grant applications; coordinating opportunities to enhance faculty grantsmanship; creatively approaching communication and administrative hurdles to develop a strong campus pipeline for successful proposals; and, when applicable, assisting the administrative efforts for internal grant competitions. This person will work proactively with minimum direction and guidance within a service-team environment.

The Office of Research is hiring a RD Technical Grant Specialist to support specific areas of focus. Preference will be given to applicants with education in and/or experience supporting research in Arts, Physical and Biological Sciences, and Education. Applicants with a background in graphic design are encouraged to apply to further enhance proposal visual communication.

Research Development encompasses a set of strategic, proactive, catalytic, and capacity-building activities designed to facilitate individual faculty members, teams of researchers, and central research administrations in attracting extramural research funding, creating relationships, and developing and implementing strategies that increase institutional competitiveness. Research Development professionals initiate and nurture critical partnerships and alliances throughout the institutional research enterprise and between institutions?and with their external stakeholders. With the goal of enabling excellent, competitive, individual and team research, Research Development professionals build and implement strategic services and resources that span across disciplinary and administrative barriers within and beyond their organization. Research Development includes a broad spectrum of activities including: funding opportunity identification and targeted communication; grant/contract proposal development; research team building; interaction with funding agencies and institutional research administration and leadership; interaction with institutional federal relations; and outreach activities and training.
