Background

The Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health (GIBH), a research institution affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is situated in Guangzhou, China. As located in the southern region, Guangzhou holds historical, cultural, and economic significance for the country. GIBH strives to implement the "Healthy China" strategy and address public health needs. Its research focuses on investigating pathological mechanisms and developing innovative solutions for disease prevention and control. Furthermore, GIBH offers a world-class core facility and research and development (R&D) platform in the field of biomedicine, and it also serves as a catalyst for global bioengineering and pharmaceutical industries as well as for cutting-edge, strategic-driven research.

GIBH oversees the establishment of Human Cell Lineage Atlas Facility (CLAF), a crucial component of the International Innovation and Technology Hub located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The facility's primary purpose is to facilitate fundamental and applied research in the field of life sciences, with a particular focus on advancing high-tech industries, such as biomedicine and medical instrumentation. By supporting scientific research and fostering innovation in China, CLAF is anticipated to sustain the country's international prominence and proficiency in life sciences.

CLAF aims to develop the necessary hardware and expertise to establish a worldwide open platform that facilitates cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements. This platform aims to foster cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements in the field of molecular tissue biology at the single-cell level. It aims to incorporate spatial omics data within the analysis of cell types, their developmental trajectories, ageing processes, and pathological conditions. As an open facility, CLAF has the vision of becoming an international hub for academic exchange and collaboration, a centre for talent acquisition and training, and an incubator for industrial innovation.

Position Description

 1.        Technology Development Post

1.1 Cryobiology

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Conduct theoretical research on advanced techniques for efficiently storing organs or tissues.
  • Assess and measure the cryopreservation of crucial functional cell types within organ tissues.
  • Develop an automated and intelligent preservation and freezing system.

1.2 Optical Imaging Technology

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Develop microscopy technology and equipment, including super-resolution microscopy, OCT, and holographic microscopy.
  • Design and develop optical 3D printing and related technologies.
  • Design and develop optical detection technologies for biomedicine.

1.3  Automation Development

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Develop automation solutions to address challenges related to performance, safety, quality, and achievement of goals, using PLC, robotics, or SCADA improvement projects.
  • Supervise and guide a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring the successful execution of projects.
  • Offer technical support and training to team members to facilitate their ongoing professional growth.
  • Collaborate with biologists to create automated solutions for biological laboratories.

1.4 Microfluidics and MEMS

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Develop microfluidic and MEMS techniques for single-cell resolution omics.
  • Characterize and optimize microfluidic devices.
  • Integrate microfluidic devices with existing omic techniques.
  • Collaborate with biologists to optimize biology protocols using novel devices.

1.5 Image Processing

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop image-based methods for cell segmentation and identification.
  • Develop data fusion methods for MRI, CT, optical imaging, and TEM.
  • Create tools for the routine analysis needs of biologists.

1.6 Bioinformatics - Causal Inference Based on multi-omics data

 Principal Responsibilities:

  • Develop perturb-seq or advanced technologies for defining causal relationships in gene expression, epigenetic regulation, and cell fate.
  • Develop algorithms for causal inference using sequencing data, particularly for single-cell perturb-seq omics data.
  • Focus on cell fate changes and the creation of virtual systems to mimic development or disease with cell dynamics.

1.7 Cell Lineage Tracing 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Expert in cell lineage tracing methods based on barcode introduction.
  • Develop new generation barcoding methods for long-term, high-resolution tracing of multiple lineages in vivo.
  • Research methods for recording intermediate stages during lineage tracing.
  • Proficient in long fragment gene editing technologies.

1.8 Lung Stem Cell and Regeneration

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Expert at lung development, lung regeneration after injury, or lung stem cells.
  • Develop stem cell transplantation method for lung regeneration.
  • Investigate new lung stem cell and develop culture method.
  • Investigate chronic lung disease from stem cell and regeneration angle.

2.     Biological Application Post

2.1 Tumour Biology

Using lineage analysis and multi-omics techniques to discover new mechanisms and confirm new targets for malignant tumors such as lung cancer and prostate cancer, and develop new strategies for combined therapy.

2.2 mRNA Technology

Develop novel RNA sequence modular construction and cyclization techniques; Build core technology system for mRNA optimization design, targeted delivery, and independent production of raw materials, providing support for the development of RNA based vaccines, drugs, and gene editing strategies, and offering new strategies for cell therapy.

2.3 Virology

Based on existing therapeutic vaccines, candidate drugs, and animal models, analyze the interaction between the virus and host cell interface, discover new targets, design and screen candidate drugs, and develop therapeutic vaccines and new strategies for virus therapy using synthetic biology and other methods.

2.4 New Antibody Technology

Building new antibody (Rabbit, sheep) development technologies and platforms to provide a foundation for drug research and cell therapy.

2.5 Immunology

Based on classical immunology, to study the immunological mechanisms involved in tumor development and treatment, explore new methods of immune tolerance in immune cell therapy, and develop new technologies to avoid immune rejection by donor cells.

2.6 Gene-editing Technology

By utilizing technologies such as human pluripotent stem cell differentiation and small molecule induced reprogramming, safe and efficient gene manipulation techniques are established for diseases such as tumors and gene functional defects, achieving functional upgrades and modifications of therapeutic cells, and constructing a precise therapeutic cell acquisition technology system and specifications.

2.7 Targeted Delivery Technology

Constructing a secure and efficient targeted library of protonated lipid molecules targeting immune cells, stem cells, and tumor tissues with independent intellectual property rights, exploring the molecular structure and targeted delivery structure-activity relationship.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Requirements:

  • Have a minimum of 36 months of independent research experience in renowned domestic and foreign research institutions, universities, or from industry in research and development after obtaining a doctoral degree,
  • Possess the ability to lead a team in conducting research and independently undertake postgraduate training, exhibit proactive and responsible attitudes, demonstrate good teamwork spirit, and possess excellent communication and writing skills in English.
