The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, is seeking outstanding candidates for a full time scientist with expertise in machine learning techniques, who will work with the Breast Care Surgery team on the WISDOM study of personalized breast cancer screening. Candidates will be expected to leverage machine learning to integrate environmental exposure information into breast cancer models that can predict risk for fast and slow growing cancers. The scientist will also lead the development and execution of methods for assessing toxic exposures in WISDOM and related studies and will work with team epidemiologists to determine which exposures are most critical for estimating breast cancer risk. Candidates must have a PhD and have research experience/knowledge of cancer registries, databases that track residential history, registries of hazardous exposures, and machine learning methods for risk prediction.
This position will also involve working with the CISNET modeling team from the Netherlands who developed the MISCAN model which is used to estimate the benefit and costs of breast cancer screening. The scientist will work with the Netherlands team to model growth rates for fast and slow growing cancers as an input into the MISCAN model, and analyze the costs and benefits of the different risk-based screening and risk reduction strategies being tested in the WISDOM Study. The results of this work will be used to inform policy decisions on the value of personalized screening. Candidates should have research experience/knowledge of personalized risk-based screening algorithms and cost analyses.
The position will be 60% development of risk models that integrate measures of environmental exposures and 40% on assessing the benefits and costs of risk-based screening. This position will also require the teaching of computational techniques to postbaccalaureate students, postdoctoral students, and residents, and mentoring of students and fellows in related projects. The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment is essential.
Candidates must have recognized skills in the education of surgery residents and medical students and will be expected to be active participants in the Department's residency training and educational programs.
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. This position includes membership in the [health sciences compensation plan](https://ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/apm/apm-670.pdf ) which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
