And any other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology, Faculty for the Social Wellbeing

  • Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer to work on a collaboration between the Energy and Water Agency and the University of Malta to carry out an assessment of the technical potential for deployment of solar photovoltaic technology in the Maltese Islands. The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology within the Faculty for the Social Wellbeing.
  • Applicants should be in possession of a Master's Degree in Geographic Information Systems.

  • The post is for a period of 8 months for a total of 820 hours of work, and carries an initial remuneration of €12 per hour.

  • A collaboration between the UM and EWA is in place to carry out an assessment of the technical potential for deployment of solar photovoltaic technology in the Maltese Islands. Further information may be obtained by contacting Professor Saviour Formosa at [email protected] . The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Criminology within the Faculty for the Social Wellbeing.
  • The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:
    • Finalise the DEM/DTM generation, data cleaning and Building Polygon extraction (Task 1);
    • Draft the lineage document for Task 1 above;
    • Create the spatial layers (shp files);
    • Overlay the layers in a workspace linked to the different datasets provided by EWA and the data identified in the NDA (Task 2);
    • Update the lineage document for Task 2 above;
    • Determine the technical potential, in terms of energy (capacity and generation), separately of rooftop and façade solar PV in Malta using tools inc of QGIS and the UMEP tool as per TOR methodology;
    • Carry out shadow analysis;
    • Analyse the resultant spatial outputs through cross-thematic analysis based on the datasets provided by EneMalta, PA and other entities;
    • Conceptualise and test a solar potential output model based on future aerial and drone scans;
    • Update the lineage document for Task 2;
    • Carry out exploratory analysis of floor area estimation from Task 1 outputs (Task 11);
    • Build a model that analysis the outputs based on landcover/land use and segregate data by residential (including building type i.e. apartment, house, etc), industry, services and government buildings;
    • Sample cross-test with cover/use maps and other datasets within other entities (Task 13);
    • Draft the lineage document for Tasks 11-13;
    • Carry out exploratory analysis of rural open spaces area estimation from Task 1 outputs (Task 15);
    • Carry out exploratory analysis of urban open spaces area estimation from Task 1 outputs (Task 16); and
    • Draft the lineage document for Tasks 15 and 16.
  • The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities with pre-determined timings agreed to with the Project Leader.
  • The selection procedure will involve:
  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • shortlisting; and
  • an interview and / or extended interview.
  • The post is for a period of 8 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
