Project – “ Confronting Cosmological Tensions in ESA Surveys using Machine Learning (CosmoLearn)”

Funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology - FUSION R&I: Research Excellence Programme 2023

And any other projects undertaken by the Institute of Space Sciences & Astronomy

 

Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer to carry out duties in relation to the Confronting Cosmological Tensions in ESA Surveys using Machine Learning (CosmoLearn) project funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) and in which the University of Malta is a partner. The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Institute of Space Sciences & Astronomy.

 

Applicants should be in possession of a PhD in Cosmology, or a related field of research. Skills related to numerical analysis and simulation physics in cosmology will be considered an asset, as will experience in machine learning.

The post is for a period of up to 16 months, which may be extended further subject to the availability of funds.

 

The position starts at the remuneration per annum of €31,200.   Candidates who already hold, or had held within the last six months, a Research Support Officer post (in the same grade) at the University of Malta, will start at their latest salary scale in accordance with the present salary structure for Research Support Officers.

 

As from 1st January 2024, in accordance with the new salary structure for Research Support Officers, the remuneration per annum inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment shall be €35,111.

Further information about the project may be obtained by contacting Professor Jackson Levi Said at jackson.said@um.edu.mt .  The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Institute of Space Sciences & Astronomy.

 

The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the development of new machine learning implementations in cosmology simulators;
  • Producing project deliverables within the time frames specified in the project description;
  • Write scientific conference papers related to the CosmoLearn, and presenting them at conferences;
  • Assist in dissemination activities related to the project; and
  • Perform any other project-related tasks as instructed by the project coordinator.

    The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

     

    The selection procedure will involve:

  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • shortlisting; and
  • an interview and / or extended interview.

    The post is for a period of up to 16 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
